Interview with Stephanie Daich

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The promise of a new day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
There are so many places I like to invest my time into. My number one, is my family. I so love to be outside with them any chance we can get. It is great, because my family shares many of my similar interests. Together we bike, jump on the tramp, skate, run, dance, swim, walk, imagine, write, listen to music, do crafts, paint, draw, cook, and so many other things.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
My list is so big. With all the interest I have in life, it is hard to find time to read, but I make sure I do at least 20 minutes a day of reading. I usually compile my fictional novels from family and friends. I am sort of a geek, because I get great pleasure in reading textbooks.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, I don't remember the first story I ever wrote, because I was writing stories from my earliest memories of penmanship; however, I do remember the first story I drafted on the computer. I think every other sentences started with, "So".
What is your writing process?
I have so many ideas for stories. I have to find the one that is calling the loudest to me, and then I follow it through. I have a beginning, middle, and an end. I let the characters decided everything else.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I am coming up with two stories, and I can't remember which one was first. There was, Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck. I remember reading the ending in class, and just bawling. I couldn't hold back the tears.
The other book I remember was The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. I can't tell you why that one moved me, but it sure did. I guess it was the first time I crossed cultural lines and saw a world vastly different from my own.
How do you approach cover design?
I am very lucky to be great friends with Christie Rich, an indie author. I feel like I am coasting behind her and learning so much from her. When she had Amber McNemar create her covers, I was blown away by how attractive they were. I instantly knew I wanted Amber to design my covers. I gave Amber my synopsis, and she produced masterpieces!
Describe your desk
I like to take my laptop and write outside, if that isn't possible, than at least next to a window where the sun rays can shine upon me.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I came from a split home. One of them was in suberbia. The other was in the country. My everyday life was crafted out of suberbia. My summers and weekends were shaped by the country. I loved the country more, because I felt like I could run and play outside. There were no buildings and close houses to trap in my imagination. I adored it there, and I think it allowed me to have richer fantasies. On the flip side, in suberbia, my mother was a teacher, and I base my intellectual pursuits, especially writing, to her.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am so excited about the book I am now writing. The setting is an area I recently lived, and I am having so much fun pulling in the culture of the area. That is one thing I most enjoy about reading other books, is getting the chance to live that lifestyle for the duration of the book. I hope to give that same experience with my newest book, Alora Funk.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I believe everyone inside feels they have something to offer the world. Our fantasies build us up in such a way that we are the number one rising star in our heads. The only reason we aren't on top, is because the world hasn't discovered us yet. My active imagination may take me to those levels, but I have a realistic idea that being an indie author is a road that may keep my name idle and obscure. I am also aware that my talent isn't so refined that Oprah is going to be knocking at my door any time soon. Regardless, I am excited to watch my talents blossom. My first books aren't as smooth as I would like, but I have come down a long journey since I wrote them. I have taken more college classes and experimented and gleaned ideas and knowledge wherever I can. I know with each book I write, my talent strengthens.
I guess the biggest place I hope to go with writing, is to get my name out there. I realize the impact a good book can make on a person's life. I hope to put out books that will touch people. I eventually want to write books that bring moral and direction for others. I would also like writing to open the doors to speaking opportunities, for I love to speak in public. It is a long road, with baby-step, but I am enjoying the journey. And in the end, no matter where it takes me, I must remember:

“Men who try to do something and fail are infinitely better than those who try to do nothing and succeed.”
