Interview with Stephen Shypitka

How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It was recommended to me by a mate whose counsel I trust and that is key. I think there is a certain street cred to Smashwords which in turn reflects upon authors. It is all about the writing, but Smashwords is such a keen model to help get the work out there into the ether. I was happy to sign on early.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That is hard to put into words. Freedom. Absolute freedom. To take the blank page and go anywhere and say anything without having to worry about censoring oneself. Bliss. To be the creator of worlds.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I do write for myself and to find someone who appreciates you is near the top of the charts.
What are you working on next?
Actually, right at this very moment. I'm revisiting my catalogue. It's time for new editions and new covers then we'll see.
Who are your favorite authors?
I've always been busy working and writing when I can so I am not as well read as I would like to be. It was in uni where I read the most and even then it was film school so watching movies for my generation was the priority so my memories are of Greek mythology and philosophy, George Orwell both 1984 and Animal Farm. The latter was given to me as a gift by a friend so that always helps. I do remember as a boy reading the Fantastic Voyage, Raise The Titanic and Where The Red Fern Grows, and I guess looking at my own work I can see the ribbons of all this making sense to my work.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Writing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I find writing to be so much of a mind game so I need to get out of my head so it's to the gym or to nature. Something very physical where I can get my hands dirty. I'm thinking about forming a band. I kid you not. I discovered Karaoke when I was abroad in London. SoHo had such lovely little locales and us regulars would have a pint and a song and if we were lucky a snog. I loved it. Cooking is another.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I do. It was a play actually. A mystery. The Mysterious Murders at Willingdon Manor or something like that. My drama teacher had us put it on for the entire 8th grade from that moment I was hooked. Bless her, Mrs Mercier, I remember her as well.
What is your writing process?
It’s changed over the years. I used to start with word one and write chronologically through to the bitter end. Now, I think to amuse myself, I will write scenes sometimes a line and see where it takes me. Everything is out of order. How it weaves together, I don’t worry about too much anymore. It always seems to.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, but I remember the very first story I ever wrote and that changed my life.
