Interview with Bruce Bender

Who are your favorite authors?
Richard Scarry, Ian Fleming, Barry Crump, Charles Bukowski, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, to name a few...
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Playing Music (Been drumming for 25 years) see here for latest project --->>
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
it was a story called 'Super Turtle' when I was 12 years old which the teacher read out in class as the best story of the week - we had to write a fictional story each week as part of our literacy studies,,, (I don't have a copy)
What is your writing process?
'Renondo Palms' came to me from drug induced hallucinations... otherwise, I have been writing autobiographical stories, which I write in a raw, direct, 'as it happened' way... beyond that at this stage, I guess I'll develop styles based on what I'm writing....
What do you read for pleasure?
the atlas
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Snow White And The Seven Dwarves... it deeply freaked me out (in a good and powerful way) taking me to a dark, lush fantastical world...
What are your five favorite books, and why?
This question is a bit like - 'What are your five favourite songs'?... Changeable and varied, but here's five off the top of my head...

The Mayor Of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy
The Principles Of Effortless Power by Peter Ralston
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
A Green History Of The World by Clive Ponting
Tales Of Ordinary Madness by Charles Bukowski

These books are ALL truths - deep and broad, in one way or another - of the human condition...
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Describe your desk
pc, glass of wine...
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Timaru, New Zealand.... always felt as a kid that if the shit hit the fan i.e. nuclear holocaust (at the time, the cold war was still current and world destruction wasn't so far fetched an idea) that i'd be fine.... Such a sense of freedom, but also isolation, a deep appreciation of nature from exploring the incredibly beautiful NZ wilderness... AND a knowledge of being from a small country that punches well above it's weight historically... an appreciation of the 'underdog', that the 'small guy' can win.... In the words of the New Zealand band, SPLIT ENZ... 'Aotearoa - Rugged Individual - Glistening Like A Pearl - At The Bottom Of The World - The Tyranny Of Distance - Didn't Stop The Cavaliers - So Why Should It Stop Me - I'll Conquer And Set Free'

But who is 'Uncle Melissa'?... And can oysters talk?... Well, THIS one can - and it ain't nice!
