Interview with Stuart Smith

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Los Chavez, New Mexico. It wasn't so much the town that influenced my writing as much as it was not going out very much. I spent most of my free time reading anything I could get my hands on, which led me to find that horror and fantasy were my passions.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in high school as a way to channel my feelings, but it started to take a serious turn when I met my sophomore English teacher, Mrs. Sturgill.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Ghost Train was an idea that hit me when I was sitting at a rail crossing that was completely swallowed up in fog. It had a really creepy feel to it, and the story just took off from there.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is a great tool that allows the author to take control of their work, and allows young aspiring writers a chance to have their voices heard. Without a site like this, it would be a lot harder to try and get my name out there.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The release of emotion that I feel when the ideas the have been rolling around in my head are finally out on paper.
What do your fans mean to you?
The few that i have mean the world to me. Without their support, I would be nothing.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a couple more short horror stories as well as a couple of longer suspense stories for publication on Smashwords.
Who are some of your favorite authors?
Stephen King, Nick Stephenson, Brian Harmon, Joan D. Vinge, and F. Scott Fitzgerald.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working, spending time with my family, and playing video games.
