Interview with Sukant Khurana

Published 2014-04-24.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing about social issues after 2003, when I moved to US and systematically started comparing US and Indian society. I have indulged in poetry from my High School days and scientific writing since 2000, beginning of my scientific career as a masters student.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I have been concerned with various social issues and have been writing in the form of articles. I strongly felt the need to combine my select writings in one place, so that readers can have a more complete perspective than an individual article can provide.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I really want to spend time writing instead of chasing a publisher or marketing. Also given the lower cost of production means that I can reach more audience.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Easy and quick publishing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Communicating and provoking a thought in audience.
What do your fans mean to you?
I live for stimulating conversations, art and new ideas. There is joy in communication. It is a pleasure to know that there are several people who take my ideas, explore them further, agree or disagree but in the process make it their own.
What are you working on next?
A book on alcoholism.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
New ideas to make the world a better place.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Mostly neuroscience research, making visual art, having coffee with friends or walking on off beat treks.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first few stories I read were Russian folk tales translated in Hindi. I had a vivid imagination and I literally lived in them as one of the characters, usually the prince Ivanov fighting some evil king.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in an academic, politically active and multiethnic family in Delhi. While pursuing science, I was surrounded by people from various streams of liberal arts and fine arts. This made the whole upbringing quite colorful. I grew up as an introvert child who had sudden outburst of extroversion in the middle school. Later in life, I have been in various cities of both India and US, making the experience quite varied and rich. Both success and stumbles in science, art and political activism have made the story of life more interesting.
How do you approach cover design?
I look for what conveys the most meaning. As a visual artist it is a difficult choice because of problem of excess. Nonetheless in the end it is about gut feel.
