Interview with S. E. Bradley

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I knew I wanted to write romance novels on my own terms. And being able to share them without another company telling me to conform to their rules was liberating. Going the traditional has its merits, but since I'm still fairly new in a vast see of competition I'd try giving my writing a chance to speak for itself.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Its given me the start to self-publishing. Its such a simple straight forward process that to not use it would be foolish on my part.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When readers fall in love with my characters as much as I have. When I see reviews where they are just as frustrated with Zoe as Martin would be, or when they melt for Martin's antics like Zoe does. That tells me that I've gotten my story across and they reader is right in the book with my characters.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean the world. Of course I can write stories just for myself. But its more fun when you get to share your work, and others are just as invested as you are. They take my passion and help it spread its wings. I'm not sure there's enough words in the english language to describe what my fans mean to me.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on the next installment of Rockstar's Love. Zoe and Martin just can't seem to stay out of trouble, and its so much fun writing their antics with each other.
Who are your favorite authors?
This is a tough one. I love Sylvia Day, her crossfire series is just simply amazing. I also love my more humorous romance novelist such as Alice Clayton, Mary Janice Davidson, Katie MacAlister, and Charlaine Harris. But then there are those like Laurell K. Hamilton and Kim Harrison who bring to life such amazing heroines that simply kick ass. I'm just glad to have such amazing talent that keeps providing me reading material.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
This one is incredibly cliche but its my kids. I love my husband, but there's something about waking up to those two little tykes and seeing the amazing things they do everyday.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I usually spend it either reading, netflix binging, or going on brewery hunts with my best friends.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually just go to various sites and peruse their romance section. I'm fairly open minded in the plots I'll read so I tend to download a bunch of samples and then as I work my way through I'll either buy the full version or move on. Thats actually how I discovered Alice Clayton's book The Wallbanger. Wickedly hilarious and wonderfully written. I hadn't even finished that before I was recommending it to my friends.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
This is a tough one. Growing up I used to write fan fiction so I have a few stories out there on various tv shows but my first actual story was probably about a young girl who was trying to navigate her parents divorce. I used that as my outlet while going through my own parents divorce so it was very cathartic to be able to write positive out comes to issues I was currently dealing with.
What is your writing process?
I usually come up with a bunch of plot ideas and then once I find one I really like I work on my characters. Generally I let them develop as I write with only a few hard facts decided upon in the beginning. I find most people are dynamic when you meet them so for me to already decide a persons reactions before I draft the scenarios isn't plausible for me. But after deciding on the general beginning, middle and end points I just sit down and write out the story. Its actually kind of fun because I get so lost in writing that when I go back to proof read I have to remind myself that yes I did write that.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever truly read that was an actual book had to have been Riding Freedom. It was about a girl who after an accident lost her sight and struggles to move on and bonds with this horse. It touched me back then because I was the same age as the protagonist in the book and going through my own issues. It kind of gave me an escape from my reality to see how others are dealing with theirs.
