Interview with Skye Warren

Published 2018-07-05.
Can you tell us what your new book Survival of the Richest is about?
It’s a sexy love triangle about an heiress and the two billionaires who want her! We meet Harper St. Claire when she’s still a teenager and has a love-hate relationship with her stepbrother. Only when she’s a grown up does she fully come to terms with her desire for him… but that’s when she meets another man who’s determined to claim her himself. SURVIVAL OF THE RICHEST is about the love and money and finding what you want while risking everything you have.
What made you decide to write a love triangle?
I love a challenge, and a true love triangle in which both men are viable options is something I’ve never written before. It made perfect sense for Harper St. Clare, an heiress with complex feelings toward men in general—that she would seek a man who isn’t emotionally available for her and be lured by a man who is forthright in a way she’s never met before. Only once she’s let herself surrender to love itself will she overcome her past, which is why she needs a love triangle story.
What was the hardest part about writing Harper’s story?
The essence of writing a love triangle is that half of the readers will end up disappointed, if they want the man who isn’t chosen! However it’s also part of the allure of the book… unlike a book where the ending is determined, both the journey and the final destination are unknown. It’s not for readers who are faint of heart! Or authors who like to please their readers, which I usually do!
What are your favorite books with love triangles?
SUGAR DADDY by Lisa Kleypas

The first time I read this book the ending took me by surprise. I won’t give the spoiler away, but I expected it to be the other person. But the more I read and re-read this book, which has been many times over the year, the more Kleypas’s skill as an author shines through in proving that her choice was the right man for her after all.

FAKING IT by Elisa Lorello

This sexy women’s fiction novel features a writing professor who exchanges lessons with a male escort. While the book starts as a somewhat conventional, if provocative romance, things go off the rails around the middle. Andi may long for Devin, but he’s not ready for a relationship. And her heart may belong to another man. This is a heartfelt and well-written book!

SURVIVAL OF THE RICHEST by Skye Warren

My new release focuses on Harper St. Claire, an heiress with complex relationships with men. She has a love-hate situation with her stepbrother, who also happens to control her trust fund. Actually it’s more of a hate-hate situation. Then her stepbrother’s business partner appears on the scene, confident and ambitious and determined to claim Harper for himself.

"What an incredible book! Survival of the Richest has everything -- Skye Warren's beautiful writing, a sexy, compelling story; intricate characters, and a provocative love triangle that will captivate you until the very end." ~ New York Times bestselling author Nina Lane

An heiress without a cause.
Two billionaires determined to claim her.
And a war fought on the most dangerous battlefield–the heart.

My story starts with a plunge into the cold water of Manhattan’s harbor. A strong hand hauls me back onto the deck of the luxury yacht. Christopher was supposed to be my enemy. Instead he protects me with fierce determination.

That should have been my happily ever after, but then Sutton appeared–ruthless and seductive. He doesn’t care that my heart belongs to someone else, because he’s determined to win. No matter the cost.

It’s an impossible choice, but I can’t have them both.
What music do you listen to while writing?
I’m Skye Warren, New York Times bestselling author of dangerous romance. My new release Survival of the Richest is a sexy love triangle about an heiress and the two billionaires who want her. And this is the sultry playlist that I listened to while writing the book...

1. Endgame by Taylor Swift
2. Seven Devils by Florence + the Machine
3. Million Dollar Man by Lana Del Rey
4. Back to You by Selena Gomez
5. High by Zella Day
6. Satisfied by Renée Elise Goldsberry, Original Broadway Cast of Hamilton
7. Love is Madness by Thirty Seconds to Mars (feat Halsey)
8. Hard Love by NEEDTOBREATHE
9. Can’t Help Falling in Love by Andrea Bocelli and Katherine McPhee
10. Let Me Fall by Josh Groban

Have you heard any from the list?

Do you have any artists you love here?

I hope you listen to it again after you’ve read SURVIVAL OF THE RICHEST!

How did you decide on the cover art for Survival of the Richest?
Since the book is a love triangle, I knew I wanted Harper to be on the cover. Any part of the man's body might give away which way she could lean and influence the reader. And truly, it's her story. The good, the bad, and the very sexy parts!

What motivated you to become an indie author?
It's perhaps ironic that the primary impetus for going indie was that traditional publishing would not consider books that I loved to write--dangerous romance and psychological thrillers, which are now flooding bookstores. At the end of the day it's freeing not to have to worry what editors and stores are purchasing. I still have to worry about what readers will purchase, but I've always been more comfortable with that requirement.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I can usually be found cuddling with my dogs and reading, especially on a rainy afternoon like this one.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
A million different sources--I have my favorite authors, recommendations from trusted bookish friends, and I think like most of us deep in the reading world, I absolutely love discovering someone new.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a lot of romantic suspense and historical romance, which aren't quite what I write in genre, but share a lot of similar themes--redemption, society expectations, and finding yourself in the eye of a metaphorical storm.
