Interview with Sharon Guthrie

When did you first start writing?
I started writing about 2 years ago. I was interested in writing magical stories about my granddaughter, Layla.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my book, "A Moth and A Flame", is about a young witch living in Greenwich Village. She doesn't know that she is enchanted, she just knows that she can fly and send sparks to anything that she touches. She is happy most of the time with her boyfriend, Johann, and her cat, Seven, but every now and then she longs for a place she sees in her dreams that is surrounded by sea. She does not remember being captured when she was a little girl, by a Daayan named Jurusha. And unbeknownst to her, Jurusha is planning on capturing her again, and taking her to the home of her birth, Ireland.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had been told by another writer that I could not afford a publisher and an editor, so I gave up hope, but then discovered indie publishing
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I just joined tonight, but I was given this site by a few members in my writers group
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting lost in another world, where I feel creative and peaceful at the same time.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything to me! My friends and family have made my dream come true by buying my books and encouraging me to keep writing.
What are you working on next?
The sequel to A Moth and A Flame called Witch Wars
Who are your favorite authors?
Ernest Hemingway and Tolstoy
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Writing, being creative, finding new things to write about.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Jogging on the trail near my home. Reading, spending time with my family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Some local authors, others that are about fantasy, similar to my books
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was about my granddaughter, Layla being magical.
What is your writing process?
I usually get a cup of coffee and get comfy on the couch and write a few pages a day, with my kitty cat by my side.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story that I ever read was about a black kitten. I used to read to my mother as she was doing the laundry. I would sit on the dryer, and she would listen to me and encourage me to keep reading. I loved reading ever since.
How do you approach cover design?
I think of my character and try to capture her as best that I can.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
First book - The Old Man and the Sea. So lonely but beautiful.
Second book - Anna Karenina. Portrayed raw emotion, loss, love, tragedy
Third book - Hawaii. I loved getting to know all of the characters and the way the island was described so beautifully.
Fourth book - Gone with the Wind. I loved Scarlett and Rhett, and couldn't stop reading into the night and early morning!
Fifth book - Heidi. I loved reading this book when I was little, and wished I could live in the beautiful mountains.
What do you read for pleasure?
Usually bibliographies, but lately fantasies.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Book signings, word of mouth
Describe your desk
my couch, lol!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on Ft. Monroe, Virginia, and I was always reading books. I could hear the sound of Taps being played every evening at 5. I grew up listening to classical music. My mother would drop me and my sister off at the library every Saturday morning, while she did her errands, and I felt like I was in a magical place.
If you could go anywhere in the world to write, where would it be?
I would go to Key West, and write about Hemingway, and his 6 toed cats.
