Interview with Sydney Moore

What are your five favorite books, and why?
Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. I laugh so hard every time I read this book! It is one of my favorites for its sarcasm and dry wit.

A Prayer for Owen Meany and The Cider House Rules, both by John Irving. They speak to me on a visceral level about love and loss and forgiveness.

Oh, The Places You'll Go! by Dr. Seuss. Corny, I know, but every time I read it, I feel this childlike sense of possibility!

Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern made me laugh so hard I cried.
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything! I love fiction, especially crime fiction/thrillers and of course, erotic fiction, but I also enjoy true stories, biographies, historical accounts, and much more.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read a ton of books on my Ipad. I was a holdout for a long, long time, insisting on buying printed books. My husband kept telling me that if I gave e-readers a chance I would love it, but I held out. When I was seven months pregnant and had a huge belly and was spending a great deal of time on bed rest, I was deep into George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. The printed books (in hardcover) were literally so heavy that I could not comfortably hold them and keep them off my belly, so I caved and bought them on my Ipad. Glorious!!!!! Why did I wait so long?! I have not bought a printed book since then. And lo and behold, now I find myself publishing in digital format. It just goes to show how we open ourselves to new possibilities with the most random actions!
Describe your desk
My desk is a simple, rustic wood piece covered in a mishmash of things. Right now I am looking at my Mac, a vintage desk fan, a flexible-necked lamp, a red Swingline stapler (a la Office Space), a baby monitor, a postage printer, assorted mail, a Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back mousepad, and a purse I haven't used in three months (I really will get around to moving it somewhere else one of these days).
What's the story behind your latest book?
Everything I write is based on something I have done or something I fantasize about doing; usually my books are a mix of both. I will let you imagine what has really happened and what hasn't!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest job of writing for me is the feeling that maybe my work can inspire someone to open themselves to new possibilities. The first thing I ever wrote was given to a friend of mine to read just for fun, and she called me to tell me that she never imagined I would write such a thing! Then she quickly told me that it made her feel sexy and she jumped on her boyfriend the minute he came home--something she had never done. She always waited for him to initiate sex but said she felt bold and powerful, so she put herself out there, and it was wonderful. I remember thinking, wow, I want people to feel that way. I want people to feel good about their kinks and desires. I want people to know it is normal to want more than just mainstream sex!
What are you working on next?
I am still working on the Long series, which are books about a married couple whose sex life is opened to a new level after years of predictability, but I am also hard at work on some individual titles apart from the Long books. I get inspired by new experiences and stories that I hear, and love to spin fantasies out of ordinary activities.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family. I have everything a woman could ask for in my family. They make me a better person and motivate me in ways that nothing else can.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I gave a story to a friend to read just to share my writing with someone, and she loved what she read. It made me wonder if anyone else might be interested in what I had to say. Plus, I love short erotic stories. I love the way they meet a need for people without having to be burdened with reading a ton of background and filler. There is a reason people skip to the juicy bits of books--so why not make the whole story out of the juicy bits? This pushed me to write what I know and publish it.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to read and travel and cook.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a tiny Bible belt town where the kinds of things I write about were done but never talked about. I enjoy writing erotic fiction and that passion has roots in growing up in a place where my writing would be considered shameful!
