Interview with Tabitha Levin

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a country town in Australia. One of those towns where everyone knew everyone else's business. You can find out a lot of interesting stuff about people in a town like that.
When did you first start writing?
Early. I can't remember how early, but I do remember in primary school I preferred to sit in the library to read or write rather than go outside and play with my friends.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I decided to set my latest book in a beach side village my family and I holidayed at last year. It's my first book set in Australia, which was fun.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Money and control. I had already published two books through a trad publisher and didn't enjoy the experience. I've always been a DIY'er, so when independent publishing emerged it seemed the perfect way to do (most) things myself (I still hire out for covers/editing).
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords gets me into stores I couldn't reach myself like Barnes & Noble who don't allow International authors to go direct.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Accomplishment. Every time I finish a story I'm amazed I was able to create it. It's a buzz.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! Without fans I'm nothing.
What are you working on next?
A novel about a magician's assistant that falls in love with a magician/hypnotist.
Who are your favorite authors?
Dean Koontz, Hugh Howey, Jasinda Wilder
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family. And coffee.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Peeling crazy kids off the walls, juggling dinner and homework assignments in one hand, groaning over mashed banana on the rug, and praying for a decent night's sleep.
