Interview with David Tadlock

Published 2017-01-05.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Just browsing mostly. Something that would catch my eye.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I was in elementary school when we had to write a fictional story. I wrote about Hurricane David that had recently hit the east coast. Got a 100 and an A+.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Don't really remember the "first" story I ever read but I remember the Dick and Jane books we had in school and of course Dr. Seuss.
How do you approach cover design?
I want my cover to fit the story in my book. One that would make it appealing to the reader.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Bible is by far my most favorite but I would have to say 'Count of Monte Cristo' as far as classics go. My five favorite? It would really be hard to say because I like so many of them.
What do you read for pleasure?
The Bible first and foremost but whatever I'm in the mood for at the given time. I try to read all genre of novels from classics to westerns to modern day. Even children and young teen books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have an Android tablet I keep next to my bed. Not too big and not too small.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth.
Describe your desk
Not too cluttered but not spic and span either. Enough room for my laptop and my mouse and a cup of coffee or glass of tea.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
All over south Alabama. If you drew a line on a map from where I was born to the places I've lived growing up to where I live now you would have an almost perfect triangle.
What's the story behind your latest book?
We've all been at the wrong place at the wrong time sometime in our life. But growing up as a "PK" (preacher's kid) I thought about what does a minister do when he gets caught in the same situation and how does he get out of it? But, in the end was he really in the wrong place at the wrong time or the right place at the right time?
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Mainly because no one knows me and I have a story to tell. Actually I have a lot of stories to tell and I might as well start somewhere.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
This is my first time so I really couldn't answer that correct right now. I'm hoping it will be a huge success.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating my own little world or making that movie and writing it down as it plays out in my mind.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are everything to me if I have any. I hope I'll have some eventually.
What are you working on next?
A couple of stand alone novels, another series and sequels to my Thaddeus Taite series.
Who are your favorite authors?
Linwood Barclay is probably my favorite but I do like some of James Patterson, John Grisham and David Black.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Bills. You do want me to be honest right?
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not at work I'm at home with the family or at church.
What is your writing process?
I love to write at night after everyone goes to bed when it's real quite. Some weekends I would get up very early to write.
When did you first start writing?
When the mid-life crisis hit when I turned forty I guess. I wanted to start reading more and as I read I began to get ideas to my own stories and I thought "Hey, why not?"
