Interview with Enrico Massetti

Published 2016-04-24.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mystery is my favorite subject. Commissario Montalbano and Commissario Brunetti are my favorite series.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Amazon Kindle fire.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Listing the e-books on as many e-bookstores as possible increased my distribution.
Describe your desk
My desk is in a open closet in my bedroom, with my MAC-pro with two screens.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and grew up in Italy, and moved to the USA 30 years ago. This has of course influenced my writing of tourist guides on Italian destinations.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing for my web site http://tangoitalia.com in 1997. This started as a resource of information on where to dance tango in Italy, and evolved into a comprehensive source of information on travel, food, wine and... tango in Italy. The web site is still online after all these years, and receives many visitors.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I tried to see if the information on travel in Italy that I have available on my web site could be of any interest to the market if I published it as an e-book. It was a success, so I published all my tourist guides. as e-books. Later I tried to see if a printed version vould generate sales: it did, and now I sell more printed books than e-books.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been a fundamental element in my success allowing me to reach many e-bookstores that I would not have been able to reach myself alone.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Reliving the visits to the various Italian destinations that I describe in my travel guides.
What do your fans mean to you?
When a fan writes to me that she enjoyed my guide so much that she decided to turn a 2 days visit to a place (Lake Garda) into a week-long one just to see in person the places I described in my guide it makes me very proud of the success of my guides.
What are you working on next?
I am working on tourist guides of Switzerland, a country that is just 50 miles from my hometown, and a country that I know very well and visited many times.
