Interview with Tanya R. Taylor

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up on a tropical island in The Caribbean where there is a lot of sand, sea and sun. When I was just a child, there was a large, old, dilapidated house where no one lived for a very long time. It was surrounded by many fruit trees and my brother and I used to go onto the large property many times to pick the fruits off the trees. Looking at the house with the broken glass windows, doors that were off the hinges - sitting there all dusty and alone - peaked my senses. I was already writing stories from I was around seven years old or younger and seeing that house in such a condition gave me an idea for a really scary story. My book 'CORNELIUS' - released February 12, 2015 - was birthed from that experience.

My surroundings played a slight role in my writing, but having heightened sensitivity from very young, feeling people's emotions and sympathizing with them when there were issues, I think, made my job as a writer much easier than if I didn't have that sort of exposure.
When did you first start writing?
I was between five and seven years old.
What's the story behind your book REAL ILLUSIONS?
Real Illusions was actually around eighteen years in the making. I had written it a very long time ago and did nothing with it. I just got busy with life - marriage, kids, work. After being compelled to write a non-fiction about my life, which I published in early 2014, I was led to re-visit the draft of the book, Real Illusions. I got right into it - had to bring it into the current day - then polished it up as I couldn't see a great story sitting there for another eighteen years or so doing nothing. My husband and children were also very supportive of me getting it out there and I'm glad I did.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
When I decided to write the non-fiction that was published in 2014, I became aware of this 'indie thing' and decided to give it a go. I think it's a wonderful thing as many authors are now getting a chance to tell their stories - whether fiction or non-fiction (or both - like me). It's a great opportunity to have.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean soooo much to me. They are great and I really appreciate everyone who has given me the opportunity to either bless them in some way by my non-fiction book, 'Seeing Beyond The Natural', or to entertain them with my fiction novels, 'Real Illusions', 'Hidden Sins' & 'Cornelius'. People have gotten in touch with me from different parts of the world as a result of my books and I appreciate each and every one of them tremendously.
What are you working on next?
I'm working on a sequel to 'Real Illusions'. Years ago, when I published my very first book (it was a Crime/Thriller), some people asked me when I was going to write a sequel to it. That sort of surprised me back then as I never wrote the book intending for a sequel. However, 'Real Illusions' is, in my opinion, well-suited for a sequel and I'm going to publish it as I want to please my fans.
What is your writing process?
I would write the story as a draft and then - revise, revise, revise - sometimes until I have to stop myself. The most work for me comes when it's time to revise / edit. Writing the manuscript is the easy part for me. The thoughts flow quite easily.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a variety of books for pleasure. I like several genres, so I don't limit myself. I guess, it's what type of literature I feel for at the time.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The fact that I know I have responsibilities to the people I love, but mostly to the One who created me and has me here to serve a specific purpose that doesn't just involve myself or my family, but others as well.
How do you approach cover design?
I often have a picture in mind based on what the plot is about. From there, I would relate that to my graphic designer and she would take it from there. She is extremely patient with me and we always get it just right.
