Interview with Taumas Colliver

Why did I write Critter Island?
The timing was right.
I had just finished my first novel, Of Sand and Stone - which is also published here at Smashwords. In that book, human weaknesses were explored. Dealing with reality for 6 months was not easy! I say this with tongue loosely pushing against my cheek. By the time I finished it, I was exhausted, and not greatly amused with humans.
I was on the phone with a friend, telling her I'd send her a copy as soon as I printed out the manuscript. She suggested I write a children's book.
What?! Me, write for children? What do I know about children?
She reminded me that I was a child once upon a time.
After thinking about it for awhile, I thought I'd give it a shot. My reasoning was that children today aren't really allowed to be kids, anymore. Their exposure to adult themes are everywhere. I'm certainly not a purist, and even today as an adult, I can get into mischief. It's my nature. But, what if children could listen to, or read a story, and be allowed to use their imagination? What if the characters in the book didn't swear, didn't insult, didn't hate? What if animals were the main characters? Animals who helped each other, showed respect, ya know. Like people should.

Vog Bond lives in the rawness of extremes. He refuses to be an enlistee to the madness of North American culture, preferring to feel his fullest outrage. But this story tells of a man whose eyes are too sensitive to withstand the full glare of human suffering. No sooner does his mind comprehend it, than his heart seeks to anesthetize itself through drugs, drink, sex and high speed scenery changes.

Critter Island - Illustrated Children's Stories of Rhyme with Coloring Book is not namby-pamby. There are no morals to the stories. In 900 lines of rhyme, critters' roles are re-examined. These critters are whimsical, wacky and playful, and others might be a wee bit confused. Just like people. Recommended reading 3 1/2 to 93 1/2 years old. Great fun! Enjoy!
