Interview with Michael Gray

Why Writing?
The ideas and beliefs that I write about have always been in the back of my mind, until I retired from full time work, which I did early. This allowed me time to consider them in far more detail and generated a strong desire to put them down on paper. I began by keeping a sort of diary, which journalised my thoughts as they occurred, but this soon became a book project.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born and bred in Surrey, a county south of London, England. My childhood and early adulthood had little to do with literature although I did read some Asimov and Arthur C Clarke. I was preoccupied and worked with computers in the early days of commercial take up.
When did you first start writing?
I was in my late 50's when 2150 Total Integration came literally pouring out into a word processor. I didn't know what the next sentence was going to be but it almost wrote itself. That was twelve years ago!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My science fiction is based upon where I think our future technologies will take us but in A New Star we are given a mind blowing helping hand. It begins by answering the 'big question' as we make contact with our first alien species. Although we haven't discovered other intelligent life, mathematical probability says it must exist but not necessarily friendly. We are fortunate as our alien visitor is here to help us prevent self destruction. Christian is taught how to use magical alien technologies to influence world governments to change their behaviour and stop the destruction of Earth's life supporting natural systems. It goes much further than that as humans take a step into the future.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Ease of use and the spread of distribution it offers the e-book author.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
To be able to make my visions of the future available to anyone who might be interested.
What do your fans mean to you?
I have few or maybe no fans but would be more than pleased to discuss my writing with them.
