Interview with Terrence Bull

What are you working on next?
In business, we are looking to promote the value of the Woogloo V3 PaaS (Platform as a Service) system and show both web designers and developers, as well as business owners, our proprietary success systems that enable rapid development and deployment of powerful customized solutions for creating business success in this Internet and mobile centric world. As such, we are currently reworking our reseller business model to help small web designers and developers to access the V3 system more cost-effectively and more quickly and easily.

In ministry, we are striving to get a healthy discussion going on church structure and leadership: is it biblical? We are trying to motivate churches to turn to a more biblical management system of Servant Leadership in order to release their congregation into a ministry of love out into the community. We believe it is time for the Body of Christ to arise and unite and be get equipped to be ready to handle the end time revival - and without a fundamental change to the way we currently run our churches, this cannot happen.

As far as writing goes, I have almost finished writing a fictional novel called 'The One Hundredth Monkey Virus'. Its foreword is as follows:
'Twenty-year-old John Tanning is a cold hearted billionaire genius—and he is in deep trouble. In order to stay alive, the idea upon which he turned his company into the world’s biggest and most famous brand in just two years must remain a secret. But his carefully planned penultimate misdirection awakens a two-millennium old power—throwing him into a life-and-death struggle for world domination.'
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Since I typically work to well after midnight and wake up anywhere from 6-7.30am in the morning, it takes a few blinks to get me started. However, my main motivation is the desperation I see in the families we minister to: and this includes those in business - as I considered them to also be a part of my ministry.

We usually don't like to focus on the negative aspects of our ministry, but we see so many people who are in pain and who express that pain in many ways - including through attacking us and/or our faith. We have personally had the love and grace of Christ Jesus transform our lives and want others to also experience that love and the freedom it brings.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
'Laughs' - yes! I was 12 and was given an 'F' and punished by my English teacher who thought that I must have plagiarized it from somewhere: as it was 'too good for a 12 year old to write'. He never did accept that I had written it, even though it was describing the experience I felt when coming back home from boarding school.
What is your writing process?
With business and ministry books and articles, I have a passion to express a thought that bubbles up from deep inside of me - one that I MUST put down on paper.

For my fiction novels, it is similar to inventing something new: I have an inspirational idea that I have a passion to see realized, but without most of the hard work of building a prototype and getting the final product to market.

In both cases, once I start writing, the books pretty much write themselves.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, it was the Hobbit. I have dyslexia, so I was almost 13 before I finally managed to read a novel all the way through. I then went on to read The Lord of The Rings, which took me all summer long to get through. Now I can read a novel in a few days.

This series of books built in me a deep love for the written word. I have had a passion for reading and writing ever since then.
How do you approach cover design?
I have spent a considerable period of my life as a graphic artist in the advertising industry, so designing covers for my books is relatively easy. I usually start with the theme of the book and try and find, or create, an image that best depicts that theme. I then simply lay the title over the top of that image: making sure that the words stand out in a professional manner.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am constantly reading quite a range of books and articles.

Most of the time I don't really get the luxury of reading fictional novels for pleasure - even though lately I have been enjoying a series of books by Scott Martini, a series by James Twining and also a series by William Dietrich. All of them adventure novels.

Usually I do a lot of study on the Word of God - mainly from the Bible, but also from many many reference works and other people's articles and books.

I also have to constantly keep up with the latest technology and thinking in marketing: to keep myself on my toes with regard to our software and marketing company. This means I have a range of news, technology and business websites to get through everyday.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I love using my iPad, but also, when on the go, read on my iPhone. Most of the web news, etc. I read on my computer.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Since I am yet to sell a book (all my books are currently free to download) I have yet to 'cut my teeth' on real book marketing. However, I have still had to work hard to get my books out there and to get them read. I mainly promote them through my social networks and my customer databases: personalized bulk emailing, Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Reddit and even SMS messaging. I am currently trialling Google AdWords and having some success: however, since I am promoting a free ebook, I feel like I am 'shooting fish in a barrel' to some extent.
Describe your desk
An organized mess. I try and clean it off completely from time-to-time - a way of also clearing my head of the clutter. My main desk, and work environment, is my computer screen - which is completely free of icons most of the time.
What's the inspiration behind your latest book?
My latest book, 'Equip Your Church To Love', was mainly inspired by the hurt I have seen in people affected by church politics. As an Apostle of Christ Jesus, whose calling it is to build churches, It made me dig deep to research what the bible tells us about church structure and management. What I found was that, historically, the church has adopted the world's top down management structure - which is quite the opposite of what Jesus taught called Servant Leadership. Jesus even spoke strongly directly against the religious leaders of the day and their management structures.

What I also discovered was that the language we use to describe our church leaders has directly effected how we carry out our ministries. As a consequence, the church has become inwardly focused and overly religious, instead of community focused and centered on demonstrating the love of God through good works.

I felt called to address these issues and help those well meaning Pastors and church leaders to gain understanding of biblical church structure so they can transform their people and the community around them.
