Interview with Terrence Gavin Willis

Published 2016-09-22.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always been fascinated by stories, be it ghost stories around the camp fire, or grand epic space adventures. I've no formal qualifications, and it's not something I always wanted to do, I'm an artist primarily, but through reading books, comics, tv, film, music, poetry, and even jokes, I've always enjoyed reading about characters, and how they deal with obstacles. I guess theres a few stories in me I want to tell, so I just thought - why not?
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's the story of a twenty-something girl who lives in Manchester England, who has a mental age of about 10, and its set in the 1990s She doesn't understand a lot of the things that adults deal with, and because of her young mental age, she sees everything through innocent eyes. But she also sees things other people can not. She sees visions of the Grim Reaper, and when ever he appears, someone always dies.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing is only half the job for me, the other half is illustrating elements of those words. A picture paints a thousand words, so I combine writing with art. But combining both elements to create a narrative, and hopefully connect with someone else, and they say - I get it, I understand this character , well that's the endgame.
What do your fans mean to you?
What fans? haha. Anyone who reads my work and enjoys it, but understands the characters, or can connect on a personal level with a situation, then I've done what I wanted to do. If people want more of what I produce, then that is a fantastic bonus.
What is your writing process?
Just pen and paper - lots and lots of notes, and create a character and a situation, and try and figure out how i want that character to deal with that situation.
How do you approach cover design?
Simple - just show what you need to show, but the cover needs to capture an element of the story, but also just be very bold and easy to see. no complex typography, just the book name, author and an illustration. What else do you need. Having a history in Graphic design and Illustration helps. :)
Describe your desk
Wherever there is space haha.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Bolton, England, and being in the North West, we are a friendly folk, and so many characters and personalities live here. Real people have their own stories, and they definately influence how I write.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Various sources, from iTunes and Amazon, to free ebook directories. But since finding Smashwords I've discovered a lot of independent creators who are absolutely amazing.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
It was when I was about 10 and it was a space adventure. I don't think I got past the first chapter haha
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The Water Babies. It was given to me by a close family friend for Christmas and I was hooked.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
American Gods by Neil Gaiman - that's all you need.
What are you working on next?
I've currently got two ideas in early stages. One will be a supernatural crime thriller working with another author. The other is a children's book about a Teddy Bear.
Who are your favorite authors?
Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Michael Connolly, Tolkein, Raymond E Feist, Neil Stephenson
