Interview with David W. Sokol

Published 2015-12-11.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This is from factual information taken from when my wife and I were forced to go back to careers we swore we would never go back to.

I was in a position that put me back in front of the Bar, bouncing. My wife went back to porn.

Writing was my way of handling shit. "Married to Porn" was the result. Nobody has ever truly published a work that explains the human side of porn, or the perspective of the spouse who is not part of the world of the Porn Industry. I saw the reality and the humanity, so I wrote a fucking book.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I work better on my own...

That is not to say that if a publishing house like Simon & Schuster or Idea Books reached out to me I wouldn't pursue that option, but the idea of self-publishing seemed like the right springboard at the right time.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I have only sold a few copies so far because of formatting issues, but now that that is corrected, I look forward to Smashbooks kicking ass for me!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I can breathe in my own bubble...
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans...well, if that happens, then I guess I better work on being a little less shy. The readers of my novel are people who I can relate to and who can relate to me. I don't look at any person as a "fan" necessarily as I do someone who is interested enough to find the similarities in their lives to mine that they can derive through my writing.
What are you working on next?
Let's get this one off to a good start before we talk about what's next...

...although, the next book is being developed.

BTW..."Married to Porn" is being pitched in February as a TV series. I will let you all know how that goes.
Who are your favorite authors?
Elwood Reid
Frank Moll
Harry Crews
Jerry Stahl
...and some more.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Read my book and you will find out...
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
This question belongs in a job interview...It varies.

One moment I am working out or something, then an hour later I'm doing family stuff. At some point I look at my work, and if I need to scribble something down then I do it. I might have a piss sometime in-between, and then scribble something else down (after I've peed, not during). Sleeping is good. As a parent, it's more shift-work than a full night, but I like to do that when I can. I also eat.

Most importantly, though, is telling my wife and daughter how much I love them in as many times as I can.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not really.

I know I was in Kindergarten and it involved something I could eat, my folks, and probably my dog...
What is your writing process?
I deliberate for about an hour in the morning.

Then, I write for about two or three hours.

After that I tell my wife what I wrote.

Finally, I take notes of what I see in a day and think about them before I go to sleep.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
How on earth can "Tikki Tikki Tembo" have any other impact on a five year old other than an exhausting avalanche of text that left a boy confused for most of his life? It was a poor choice as the first book I ever read because I lost the point of the book until I was 11 years old and read it again...fucking impact.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm kind of a one-man-show here, so I i\have to be creative.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Non-Fiction and Embellished Non-Fiction. Those genres just make sense.
What do you read for pleasure?
Greek History, Classics, and Beat Authors.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Tablet
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
...still working on that.
Describe your desk
...describe yours.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Texas, California, and Oklahoma...the influences are enormous! "Three divergent weather systems", that is how I describe it.
When did you first start writing?
Young...like five or six years old.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Twitter
