Interview with Anthony Mastro

What is your writing process?
I write an hour every day except Sat. and Sun. I try to write about one-thousand or more words into a novel I am doing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
One of my first stories I remember very well is one called "Jerry Todd and the Flying Flapdoodle" I remember the name but what was inside not too much.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to do my own covers. I tend to make them somewhat like the memories I have about the subject of the book. I use Adobe Photo Shop.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My five favorite books are mostly about history. The Rise and Fall of the third Reich, two on WWII, Killing Lincoln and A Team of Rivals. There are many more I like too many to mention here.
What do you read for pleasure?
The Lord of the rings. I have read all three books at least three times and always seem to find something new.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Nook as well as an I-Pad.
Describe your desk
My desk is always clear except when I'm writing. Then it gets cluttered with all the things I have looked up in my research.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the inner city of Chicago. My teacher in last year of high school gave me the urge to write and read good books.
When did you first start writing?
I have been telling stories since I was a teenager going over movies I had seen and telling them to the neighbors children. I continued that with my daughter and then to my grand daughters. I have been writing things for many years starting with a company paper I introduced to a web site all of which are gone now. Since retiring I have started to write those things I told my grand daughters. I plan on doing more now that I have the time.
What's the story behind your latest book?
There are eight stories in this latest book all of which I have told to my grand daughters over the years. I hope that you like them and will want more.
What are you working on next?
I have a few ideas and am in the middle of a novel right now. It is about the war of 1812 and a young woodsman who thinks its not his fight but something changes his mind and he goes on to fight.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Having those that read my things say that it is something good.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords is new to me but I am hoping that it will widen my readership.
