Interview with Lisa Picard

What's the story behind your latest book?
In my latest book, The Green Lady Book II, join intrepid journalist, Peter Allen, on a breathtaking adventure across space and time to answer the intriguing questions raised in Book I.
Who is the mysterious Green Lady?
How did she come to be guardian of the forest?
Thrill to these tales of seekers & soldiers, of priests & shamans, of aliens & ordinary human beings, searching for meaning in their lives.
What are you working on next?
My next book is all about embracing and healing the inner-feminine, in all her aspects. As with my first two books, I will be using simple, heart-touching fairy tales to point the reader towards deeper spiritual truths. Look out for my next book toward the middle of 2016!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The desire to continually seek, and express, the most authentic version of myself that I can access. Currently I find that expression in my writing, but also in the growing of organic vegetables, the management of alien vegetation and the planting of indigenous trees and shrubs. In this way I personally contribute to the conservation of the uniquely beautiful forests that I call home.
What is your writing process?
Writing The Green Lady was like taking dictation rather than actually writing a book! I have no doubt whatsoever that this book was a gift from some higher being. I was merely the conduit through which that gift passed. This is why I make the e-book version of The Green Lady available, completely free-of-charge, to any who would read it.

Writing The Green Lady Book II was more challenging, as some of the topics were "darker", the characters more complex and the plot more intricate. I had to grow, both as a person and as an author to write this book. I hope that readers will find many exciting and challenging new ideas contained within its pages. Most of all, I would like to think that it's just a cracking good read!
Describe your desk
I wrote The Green Lady in front of a roaring wood fire during a particularly cold, wet winter. My partner, Arn Allingham, and I sat side-by-side on our comfy couch with our laptops on our laps, accompanied by our two Dachshunds, Zing and Pikachu. At the end of each day, over a mug of steaming tea, we would read to each other what we had written. It truly was my dream come true.

By the time I got to writing Book II, I had developed a far more disciplined approach of actually sitting at a desk, as this book required far more of me in the writing process.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy is in sharing my love of, and connection with, the beautiful forests and mountains of South Africa's Garden Route, which is where I live.
I also love to share my deep fascination with fairy tale archetypes - using simple stories to impart deep spiritual truths.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Relishing my deep connection with the forest by hiking, by nurturing indigenous trees from seed, by clearing invasive alien vegetation or simply by sitting on my porch and immersing myself in the breathtaking views of forested gorges and mountains.
How do you approach cover design?
I am very fortunate that my life partner of 24 years and best friend, Arn Allingham, is a gifted graphic designer. He was able to beautifully capture the mystery and magic of the forest for me in my book covers.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like quirky, eccentric books with interesting characters who aren't afraid to be different. I also love books that have a spiritual or self-transformational theme, particularly if they have some magic in them!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My partner and I built our off-the-grid home on the border of the indigenous forest with our own hands. We live a largely self-sustaining life and the prevailing ethos is to do-it-for-ourselves. So, it simply made sense to me to continue with that ethos in the publishing of my books. I wanted to be in charge of the entire process of publishing, marketing and making my books available to as many people who wanted to read them as I could.
