Interview with Yasheca LaSha

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I became an indie author because I had a few bad experiences with publishers. Therefore, I chose to self-publish my novel in hopes of getting the story out there.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I am new to Smashwords and have yet to see the benefits of using this platform for book exposure. I will update this question when I have more experience with the platform.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is the feedback I receive from readers on how much they enjoy the characters and how they empathize with the character's situations. Giving readers a way to escape their daily lives for a low price is very fulfilling.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans mean everything to me. I would be nothing without them.
What are you working on next?
I am working on three novels right now. It is hard trying to choose which project I will release next. However, I guarantee the readers will not be disappointed in this project.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are Donald Goines, Terri Woods, Nikki Turner, and Terry McMillan.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The desire to succeed inspires me to get out of bed each day.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing I am working on completing my MBA and creating pieces to add to my jewelry boutique.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most of the eBooks I read are found through Facebook groups.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I remember writing was a play based on urban characters.
What is your writing process?
My writing process starts with writing in a notebook and then typing the project into an application that I can easily upload my work from.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a concept in my head and reach out to my cover artist, and she usually makes it happen in a quick turnaround time.

My five favorite books are:

Mama- Terry McMillan

These are my favorite books because I can relate to the characters and they were amongst the first books that introduced me to the genre in which I write.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read urban fiction for pleasure. I have many author friends and I support their work.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I am old school and prefer a paperback in my hand when reading. However, I have a cellphone, desktop, laptop and tablet. I utilize all of these devices when reading. If I had to choose an electronic device to read then I would choose the tablet.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am new to the indie author realm and have just started experimenting with marketing and I hope to find avenues that work best for the genre I pen.
Describe your desk
My desk is very organized. I do not like clutter and I really am not too fond of this being out of place. My work area needs to be free from clutter.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in an urban area and it definitely has a large influence in my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I began writing in elementary school.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I have read books since grade school. However, the first book I remember having an impact on my life and the way I think is 'The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman'. This book was emotional and opened my eyes to a lot.
