Interview with Yolanda Olson

Published 2013-11-22.
What was the inspiration for your latest book?
Life events. I took a dfiferent approach with Saving Marley in the fact that it is NOT paranormal or scifi in anyway. I also decided to not to use chapters because to me, this is one big chapter of her life. A lot of it is very close to my heart because I know how Marley feels. We're the same I guess you could say. I was lucky enough to have the beautiful Samantha Smith agree to be on the cover and I'll be enternally grateful to her for it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like being able to control the aspects of my story. I mean I always wanted to be able to put stuff out for people to read and hopefully think of it as original and wondering if they'll be another book coming. I like being able to do the covers and the editing and not having to worry about my story being rewritten because "this person" said so.
When did you first start writing?
Probably when I was about 8 years old. I remember writing short stories for years as a child. It was fun to me and I would let my friends read what I wrote and hope it would scare them or thrill them.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
With my horror novels, the reactions I get. A lot of the time it's like, "That was gross!" Or "Wow! did that happen?!" Or "How did you possibly think about that?" I think my favorite was from a reader that read Unwound and said that when she read a certain part she was so shocked she finished the book that night.
What do your fans mean to you?
THE WORLD. I love interacting with them on facebook and getting their input and doing giveaways and contests for them!
What are you working on next?
A totally new twisted horror series.
Who are your favorite authors?
Kim Harrison & Kelley Armstrong!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Playing video games with my husband!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yeah it was a little horror story about a serial killer that would leave a rose when he killed people. But he was a monster of some sort, so not human. Ahhhh, the mind of a child lol
How do you approach cover design?
I have model friends and talented photographer friends who make my visions come to life!
What's the story behind your latest book?
I kind of wanted to see what would happen if the world was post apocalyptic and the angels and devils HAD to work together. I threw in a little spice for my readers who had asked me for some adult content. Hence, the Infernal Paradise series was born!
What is your writing process?
I always have a journal on me. I get ideas from the weirdest things. I mean I could be looking out the window and if THAT cloud looks like something, I'll grab my pen.
