Interview with V. L. Dillon

When did you first start writing?
I started writing in 1990.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Imagination. I have an audacious imagination that is hard to believe. I don't want to go having to get an agent and all that-I just want to be free to write and have my friends and I be the editors, cause I don't want to be censored - so to speak.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy of writing is that I get to go play out my stories in my head. I get to fictionally live them out and hopefully, so do me readers.
What do your fans mean to you?
Without fans, there is only you. The fans are everything. You become a family of sorts.
What are you working on next?
I always have stories dancing around in my head, so I cannot say for sure what is coming next. It all depends on the one that strikes my fancy.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Music and writing. I always know that everyday when I wake up -it's a new day for a story.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am sometimes on social media, such as face book. Sometime I like to sit and read the paper and I can get ideas from that. There are people also who become my muse, unknown to them. I don't however like reading other peoples books, because I am always afraid their style may influence and change mine.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do. It was, 'All in a days work.' I had taken a vacation and some of the people I was around inspired the outline of the story.
What is your writing process?
Good question. The writing progress is different for everyone. I believe mine is considered a bit bizarre. I get a thought in my head, let my imagination play with it and start working on a book cover which seals the deal. I keep a picture of my cover tacked to my shelf over my computer, and look at it often when writing. It keeps me on track and hopefully keeps writers block at bay.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design to me is a feeling. I, myself or one of two different friends, who are awesome at book covers - help me out and make them, depending on the amount of expertise of magical design they each independently know how to do. So, I just tell them in a couple different way what I am looking for. I tell then in a vision way and a feeling way. One of us, whoever is doing the particular cover, ALWAYS gets it spot on the first time 'round.
