Interview with Amber Kuhlman

How do you approach cover design?
I have an amazing cover designer named Nancy at Colbert Creative Design. She's affordable and does amazing work! She gets a sense of what I want from samples and creates something fabulous.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Even though I write romance (I'm a sucker for a good lover's quarrel), my favorite book is The Shining by Stephen King. I enjoy a good horror book just as much as I enjoy a dark romance.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My Kindle Paperwhite. While obviously nothing beats the feel of real pages between your fingers, I found that it's easier to read in bed in the dark with my Kindle.
Describe your desk
I have a small little office that is part of my bedroom, the perfect little writer's nook. Unfortunately, I can't watch my toddler when I'm in there, so I spent much of my time in the living-room where I can have eyes on everything.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first 20-page novel in middle school during a particularly boring day of History class. I was hooked, and have been writing ever since.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is a WIP called Ladder One. Here's the blurb so you can get a sense for what it's about:

"Becoming the first female firefighter in a small-town, conservative fire department full of egotistical men should be something to be proud of, but Hallie has never felt so rejected. The men don’t want her there, and neither does anyone else. With the taunts, harassment, and dangerous situations she keeps finding herself in, sometimes quitting sounds like the only way out. It’s even harder when the townspeople themselves see her as a hussy for wanting to do a man’s job.

Fortunately, Hallie has someone on her side: their captain, Tate Becker. Handsome, kind, and charming, Hallie isn’t sure she’d make it there without Tate’s support, especially when her fiancé Jeremy doesn’t even want to hear about her day.
As Hallie fights for acceptance into this testosterone-riddled, tight-knit crew—all while defending her reputation to the town and her to own family--she finds that the only person she wants to be around anymore is Tate. Too bad she’s engaged, and he’s dating another department’s jealous paramedic.

When Hallie is nearly killed during a rescue mission, Tate isn’t the only one who starts to see Hallie as much more than just an intrusive female in their all-boys club. Just as she’s starting to fit in, the squad finds that a hidden arsonist is responsible for these treacherous fires they keep responding to—and it’s possibly one of their very own.
Hallie is framed, and trust begins to shatter. Someone wants her gone, and they’re making it clear. Proving her innocence and getting her crew to trust her again means finding the real culprit, even if it kills her."

This book was inspired by my own desires to make it into the fire department in my own town (yes, before I became an author I wanted to be the first firewoman on the crew). Fortunately, I never had to endure what Hallie does in the book, but it was great inspiration!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I pitched my novels for years and years and years to agents. In 2014 I finally signed with a lovely agent, and while we were in the middle of submission to editors, she quit her job and dropped her clients. I kept trying, kept pushing, and while other agents were impressed with the writing and stories, I never got the LOVE that I was looking for. I kept revising, kept making my books better, and when a good friend added me to the Facebook group 20booksto50k, I was overwhelmed with so many success stories I never even thought were possible! I regret waiting so long to go Indie.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My son, my husband, and my drive to be successful in the writing market. Being an author is all I've ever wanted to do.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Most of my time is spent with my son and husband, as well as one horse, two dogs, and a cat.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was 20 pages, hand-written, and the young female character was based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie. I loved those books.
