Interview with Timothy Rodgers

Published 2015-02-24.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town called Petaluma. I had a normal public education for the most part and I struggled with English going through school. Growing up, I never would have imagined becoming a self-published author.
When did you first start writing?
When I was little I wrote some fan fiction off my favorite comic and movie characters. I have on and off, kept journals since fifth grade. In sixth grade I barely dodged a metaphorical bullet writing a joke in my personal class journal. I remember my teacher not often looking at my writing, she did that day.
What motivated you to write "United States Human Expedition"?
Homelessness has been a problem since as far back as I can remember. There are many variables we do not understand about economics and how certain mechanics keep people from being able to advance in life financially. There is so much unfulfilled need that something like this is coming. Social security and food stamps is not a viable check and balance on money. If we do not start thinking about what it will look like to make it happen...we will not have the answer we need when we need it. Many people say the problem is the vast gap between the rich and the poor, but the real problem is the fact there is nothing to help people recover when they financially bottom out. Propaganda incites the mentality that if people find themselves in this position, it is because they deserve it which I believe is not so. We need a system that gives people the best chance to recover possible, not one that encourages disability by crippling the people at that level with the process.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Being able to simply publish and reach out to various devices is a huge marketing crutch. It is not hard to do and anyone can do it. It is also far more cost effective than paperback publishing.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The stir of thought and emotion.
Who are your favorite authors?
R.L. Stine when I was growing up. I read "Goosebumps" throughout school. I had hoped that Tom Clancy would continue with "Rainbow Six" in writing. I like "a Song of Ice and Fire" by George R.R. Martin. I learned quite a bit from Howard Zinn's take on history. Comics have also played a major role in my ideas.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The opportunity to make a difference in the world. A difference not just anyone can make.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
With friends when I can be. I play a couple online games and a trading card game from time to time. I have so many interests I could take all day to list them.
What do your fans mean to you?
People are why I do what I do.
Describe your desk
A black PC with a 17 inch monitor. Keyboard and mouse included.
What is your writing process?
Many of the stories and books that I will be publishing in the near and even distant future are dialogues that have long been thought about. A vast majority of my literature is handwritten and is still in a raw form. There is more to come soon.
How do you approach cover design?
I create my own covers. I like to keep them simple because it is the dialogue that counts.
What are you working on next?
"White Widow's Web" opens up a vampire based trilogy that will lead into "White Widow's Duet" and conclude with "White Widow's Redemption."
"Echoes of the Labyrinth" opens up a minotaur and Roman mythology trilogy that will lead into "Scars of the Labyrinth" and conclude with "Ruler of the Labyrinth."

The Human Expedition concept will be portrayed in "The War to End All Wars". It will be an extensive series that helps illustrate how the concept can be applied and maintained.
"The End of the Beginning" gets it started, followed by "Masks of Division" and will end with "Keepers of Secrets" as Theo and Charles being the main characters.
Charles's son, Kyle will become the main character in the following trilogy story along with a new character that will be introduced in "Keepers of Secrets".

"Grazing Among the Cosmos" opens up a trilogy where humans are not on top of the food chain. This story will follow a man who is taken from his normal life and discovers that there is an interplanetary civilization that raises humans for agricultural purposes. "Grazing Among the Creators" will be the second title and this series will conclude with "Grazing Among the Generations".

More short stories and other mythical full length eBooks are also in the works.
Why are the prices on your eBook stories lower?
My introductions of series are written around being able to fit into a movie. It is my way on seeing that the stories begin the way I intend them to be seen. Since my series openers are between 20-40k words each and the sequels will all be between 120-200k+ words each, the prices are being adjusted to proportion.

Series openers will now be priced at $1.99 while their far larger sequels will be $2.99. If you purchased any series openers for original price of $2.99, you will get the rest of the future titles in that series for free. E-mail me at thoughtreaperx@gmail.com for redemption code.
