Interview with Michelle Geroux

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in southwest Michigan. Have to admit my enormous imagination did not come from my environment. I think television had a lot to do with it. Growing up watching The Twilight Zone and Star Trek really opened my eyes to the unlimited possibilities of the mind.
When did you first start writing?
In junior high. I would test my material on my mom, she was a great influence on my writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It follows an older woman as she travels to France to assume an inheritance. Her aunt's gorgeous, married attorney tries seducing her after she meets and falls for a local painter. The Will stipulates she live at the estate for a year and the decision whether to sell or not gets sticky as she's swept away by her new lover and the lifestyle of the rich and famous. Much of it is tongue in cheek and the heroine innocently becomes entangled in danger by a clever priest who tricks her into being his accomplice.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to have control over the story. I love to read and know enough about writing to know how to keep the story moving. It was the introduction in Ken Follett's novel; Pillars Of The Earth, that gave me to courage to seriously give writing a try and French Romance is my first complete novel.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Only time will tell. I'm relatively unknown and unfortunately, am computer inept. I know my way around when it comes to formatting my books, but am easily overwhelmed by apps and websites. I want to believe my writing will stand on it's own, but it doesn't work that way sometimes, so I guess it's time to stop writing and start advertising.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The reason I write romance is because it's lacking in everyday life. I figure if I can't get romance from outside, I'll create it for myself and that's why my fantasies are generally for women. I may, while in the process of filling a void for myself end up filling a void for others too, but I write for myself. I love to research too, because the world is a fascinating place and people can be so different.
What do your fans mean to you?
I do currently have a handful of local fans and they mean the world to me. I like to think the issues I address are pretty standard in the life of an average woman and hope they're amused by my style. I don't like morals, just want to entertain.
What are you working on next?
I'm in the process of having my next novel; Deadly Force, proofread. It's a sequel to Enticement in that it follows one of the detectives as they try to unravel a string of murders. I've also just completed the sequel to Pilgrim. It picks up where Book I leaves off and focuses on the war between The Brotherhood of the Crimson Sun and Federal troops. The brotherhood is loosely based on ISIS here in the US. I've also begun a book that takes place in 209 BC and follows the climb of a Greek slave in Rome from a life of servitude to military accomplishments.
Who are your favorite authors?
Dan Brown, Robert Galbraith, Ken Follett, Janet Evanovich, and Spencer Quinn. I do not limit my reading to just those authors, they just happen to be my favorites.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My stories. Usually during the course of a day, I've come up with a new idea or plot line and can't wait to sit down and put it on paper, or in the computer to be more exact.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Working on the yard and playing with my dogs. I also play flute, though I dare say solely for my own pleasure.
