Interview with Timothy Lee

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in South Lake Tahoe, which is a great place to live if you are the outdoors type. Not being such, I tended to stay out of the snow and wrote; plays, short stories, anything my wandering imagination might hit upon.
When did you first start writing?
I have been writing in one capacity or another for as far back as I can remember. As I recall my creative writing coincided with my composing of music.
What's the story behind your latest book?
"MOST WANTED - Billy 8" is the final book in the "Billy" series, and being such, I was hoping to make it a satisfying one for the many followers of Billy and his sister, Mirna. Trapping Billy in a highrise building in Portland, Oregon, during an earthquake seemed an adequate edge-of-the-seat thriller. Add to that the fact that Billy's sister is choosing to believe everybody else but her brother and has stopped speaking to him added to the poor guy's misery. It was also time for him to find love again, and yet even that road is paved with problem after problem. All in all, I needed to end the series with a crescendo, a crash of cymbals and all the loose ends having been tied into tidy little rainbow bows.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has been the smooth stretch of freeway in what had otherwise been a rocky road to publishing. Although having had several books in print, the publishers' lack of promotion made it clear that this was not the path for me to follow. Enter the eBook and Smashwords! I have been with Smashwords almost since its inception and almost immediately things began reaching readers worldwide, proving that my decision to ditch the printed book and go strictly digital. Today my books are reaching an ever-increasing audience and I cannot say enough about Mark and his team at Smashwords. They are fantastic!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy is being able to reach a reader's emotions. Hearing from readers and learning of their having laughed, cried, and cared what happened to the characters tells me that I am doing my job, and this offers me a tremendous amount of satisfaction. It's all about the reader, and if he/she is satisfied, then I am satisfied.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are the world to me. Receiving letters is a reward beyond any riches I could ever receive and each and every letter is addressed by me personally. My fans are royalty and I am their humble servant... with a pen and paper (or computer and keyboard).
What are you working on next?
My next project will be a step away from the accustomed series formats ("Lyle" & "Billy"). Although I enjoy a continuing storyline (as do the readers), I came upon an idea that will be all-inclusive, allowing me to concentrate on a single story. There is another trilogy in the works, but for now that will take a backseat to the current project... sort of like a cleansing of the palate before returning to the main meal.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Being a massive Anaheim Disneyland and roller coaster fanatic, I enjoy breaking out of the routine of sitting alone writing and give in to my obsessions at least once a year. While at home, I break up the writing with my daily walks to sort of get my thoughts back in order and then hit the computer again.
What is your writing process?
I know this sounds simplistic but I just sit down and begin where I left off last time. Many authors outline their books and work around that but this type of discipline escapes me completely. Actually, I prefer to have the storyline lead me, rather than the other way around; this allows me to be just as surprised at every turn as the reader, and thus, keeps me guessing as to how things are going to turn out.
How do you approach cover design?
The storyline dictates the cover design, obviously, although that is not always the case. With the completion of "MOST WANTED - Billy 8" I was not only without a cover but a title as well. Therefore, I started searching around for online pictures that would give me direction, finally zeroing in and focusing on one particular theme that led to both the cover and book title. Generally this is not the case but in this instance it worked out well.
What do you read for pleasure?
Believe it or not, I do not do much reading. Surprisingly, I am moderately dyslexic and therefore have some difficulty with reading and comprehension. Fortunately, this disability does not extend to writing.
