Interview with Tina Traverse

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a third-grade assignment. My own personal twist on the bible's good samaritan story. I enjoyed writing the story and became hooked! I was eight and haven't stopped writing since.
What is your writing process?
When a story idea pops into my imagination, I will take a few days and work the details in my mind first. Forming the characters, places, plot and dialogue in my head like it was a movie, then I will sit at the computer and write the first draft. Once the story is complete, I will take a break for a few days before returning and editing several drafts before sending it manuscript to my editor.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Cinderella. This is my favorite fairy tale. The story of a beautiful young woman being forced to live in squalor as her evil stepmother and step sister's maid after her beloved father dies touched my heart and made me sad because Cinderella was treated so badly because the remaining family she had left were jealous of her beauty, kindness, and innocence. I was so mad at those mean women and wanted revenge for the dear heroine! So you can imagine how my heart soared when Cinderella found her prince and lived happily ever after, which was the perfect revenge! The story still invokes those same emotions when I read it to my children.
How do you approach cover design?
My covers are designed by the gifted Ida Jansson of Amygdala design. (http://www.amygdaladesign.net.) Once my story is complete and in my editor's hands, I start to think about what image I would like on my cover that best represents the story. Once I have my idea, I converse with Ida, telling her my ideas. She will then produce a cover based on my idea. If it works, that's my cover or if not, we keep working on it until it's something memorable!
What do you read for pleasure?
For pleasure, I like getting lost in suspense, mystery thrillers that keep me turning the page and if there is a romance thrown in, all the better! I also enjoy paranormal stories such as vampire fiction and the occasional erotic novel too!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The iBooks app. I love the crisp and clear font, making the text easier to read. Also, the ability to read on my iPhone and pick up where I left off on my computer.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I tried marketing through social media, which only yielded minimal sales. I have used a blog tour and a website that markets to my genre. Offered giveaways, etc and while I achieved many subscribers to use in my mass marketing campaign through Mailchimp, none of them were overly successful. The one that does work is my paperback sales which are sold through word of mouth on a local level.
Describe your desk
I hate clutter! So, my computer desk is clutter free with only my laptop, laptop stand, and keyboard. That's it. My printer is in a separate place in the room as not to clutter my desk.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a quiet, scenic rural town in my home province of Newfoundland, Canada. Like most places in Newfoundland, my hometown is situated by the sea and every day I woke up to the scent of salt air. There was little noise, only the sound of the
sea gulls flying overhead as the fishermen came in after a day on the sea. Our culture is unique. We have our own time zone, language, and food. Our people are hard working, friendly and colourful. All these characteristics combined have created the perfect backdrop for my stories. I'm able to create unique, never seen before supernatural beings based on the residents I grew up with and place them in a world ruled by the rugged beauty of the sea. My Scarlet Desire trilogy is the perfect example of this.

What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest published book, Scarlet Desire: Covet is based on an earlier series that I scrapped because I felt that the plot was going nowhere. When my editor suggested that I write first person present and set my stories in my home province of Newfoundland, the story began to form and flow. It centers around three main characters, Scarlett, a witch with a rare power that is coveted by dangerous vampires and twins Sebastian and Declynn Sinclair. Both of them are different as night and day. Sebastian is quiet, responsible and subdued, his sister's protector. Declynn is bold, brassy, and reckless, but she's this way because of a secret she is forced to hide. When Scarlett is forced to leave her home because she is pursued by two evil vampire brothers who would stop at nothing to possess her, she encounters and finds shelter with the Sinclair twins, newborn vampires. (Sebastian a soul reaper and Declynn, a sanguine.) They set aside ancient prejudices in order to keep Scarlett safe and they do it in the most unusual way.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've spent years trying to realize my dream to become a published author. I became disheartened with the many rejections and contemplated giving up my dream until I read an article about Hugh Howley, author of Wool and his start as an indie author. This inspired me to try self-publshing. Once I held my published work in my hands, I never looked back.

In October of 2009, after nine long years of frustration, tears and dizzy confusion, my son, Christian Peter Traverse was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism. It was a time of both sadness and joy. Joy because after nine years of wondering what was wrong with our child, we now knew. Sadness because our child had a life time of struggling ahead of him. Inside is a detailed account of our journey
