Interview with T.L. McDonald

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading. Lots and lots of reading. There's just so many great books out there. And if I'm not reading then I'm spending time with my family and friends or catching up on my favorite tv shows.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Emails and Facebook ads mostly. But I also like to just browse on various sites such as here on Smashwords.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do actually. I was in elementary school and it was about a magical medallion and a scary graveyard.
What is your writing process?
My writing process is very disorganized. I don't really use outlines, though I do jot down notes or scenes on post-it notes which are then stuck all over my desk or computer whenever I am inspired by something I hear, see, or even dream. Then once I'm ready to write, I turn on the music (mostly rock, though I will change it up every now and then depending on what type of scene I'm writing, or what mood I'm in), and just let the ideas come as they may. Most of what I write occurs organically. I may start off wanting to write one thing and end up writing something completely different. I just go where the story leads me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I've read a ton of stories over my lifetime, but I think the ones that inspired me the most at a young age and made me want to be a writer we're R.L. Stine's Goosebumps and Fear Street series and L.J. Smith's Forbidden Game series. I've always loved the horror and fantasy genre and you will certainly find those elements in the books I write.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Only five? I pretty much love most of the books that I've read, but the one's that I've read and re-read the most are The Mortal Instruments (the entire series) as well as The Infernal Devices (the entire series) by Cassandra Clare, Hush, Hush (the entire series) by Becca Fitzpatrick, Shatter Me (the entire series) by Tahereh Mafi, Sweep (the entire series) by Cate Tiernan. I really like all of these books because I think they blend in fantasy and the supernatural in very realistic ways, making for great stories.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly I read YA fantasy, urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and dystopian books. But really I'm open to reading anything. If the story piques my interest, no matter what genre it's in I'll give it a read.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Lately it's been my iPhone. I think I have every reading app on there. Lol. But I'll also read on my iPad or my computer.
Describe your desk
Extremely messy. Lol. At any given time, and usually strung all over the surface, you can find post-it notes, loose papers, headphones, pens, various books, my computer of course, my iPad, my phone, and whatever snack I'm currently eating.
How do you approach cover design?
I tried my hand at it once for my first book. It wasn't too bad for what it was - a picture I had taken in the graveyard next door to my house - but it didn't really convey urban fantasy, so I started looking around online. And that's when I discovered the awesome talents of Claudia McKinney. She has designed two of my covers so far.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in elementary school. I was always a very imaginative kids and liked to create my own fantasy worlds.
