Interview with Thomas Maurice King

How do you approach cover design?
I think what catches my audience eye. I want them to pop and also give a sense of mystery. I want to give a hint of the world they're entering. It's journey to a place and a world of characters and story. I believe the cover should get you prepared to enter a fantasy. I think a lot of life should live on the cover.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
James and Giant Peach i think had so much life, i pretty sure you wanted a erotica novel, but this book was a beautiful written story of a world that had some life. Who knew bugs had it tough. Story, by Robert Mckee. His break down of character and story development is straight forward and really helps with storytelling. The cat in the hat, the most iconic creation. And probably the eaiset halloween coustome construction of all time. Fifty Shades of Grey gave you hardcore and style mixed with devious sexual acts. The number of sales of this book easily tells you what the audience and poeple feel about sex now. Where the wild things are. We will never know what or where those crazy forest animals came from, but we wanted play with them.
What do you read for pleasure?
I do. Especially when you read something that you can't put down. It's so good where you can't wait to dive deeper into the lives of these characters.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I still believe kindle is pretty good. I also like reading on an Ipad.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Making sure my book covers forces you to stop and take notice. I also believe word of mouth is a big help. Real fans will always want more.
Describe your desk
A lot of sticky notes. I got so many thoughts and conversations i have with myself. Some them be ideas regarding my books. I got pictures that and magazines that always rotate weekly that inspires me or sparks an idea. I even have a drawing pad. I might free hand artwork which i would like for my ebooks to emulate. A Bluetooth speak and a keyboard. Music is very inspiring. Certain sounds trigger emotion.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the city of New York and then i moved to North Carolina. I think a place like New York is so fast and theirs always somwthing going on. North Carolina has that calmness, its subtle and historic.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in 2010 but it was just scripts/screenplays. I
started to dabble in erotica when I was brainstorming in Microsoft
word and just went crazy with one night and wrote a short story about
a sexual experience.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Blue Interview is a book where I think we as a society are at
today, people look at status and daydream about wanting to live in the shoes of icons that we see everyday. Even when wanting to sleep with them.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Getting into movies. I love making movies but I also realize not everything will get made into a movie. So I saw becoming a indie author was an outlet for the stories that might never live on screen to still be told. I also wanted complete control of what I can offer my audience and didn’t
want to have to travel all over the place trying to find and fit into
a system that couldn’t see my vision. Smashwords just seemed like the place to do it.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I learned so much about laying the foundation of creating a solid
piece of work. I could’ve let or paid someone to publish my book, but
learning how to understand the little details just made me a better
artist. Appreciating the building process. I was into sports growing
up, in order not to ride the bench you had to go and put the effort in
to get on the field. Artist that came before me made similar efforts,
why shouldn’t I put in the same effort myself.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing how far I can go with my story telling abilities. How far can I
stretch my imagination? Telling a great story whether it has sex or
not. It’s about taking characters into new and uncharted territories.
Star Trek boldly went where nobody would go. That’s how I approach my
What do your fans mean to you?
The most. I’m a fan of different writers and once I’m done with a
book, I can’t wait to pick up another one and escape in that world. I want my readers to look around like they lost something waiting for another book to be released from me.
What are you working on next?
I got three series coming, that I can’t wait to share with my readers. I got The Dark Alpha Kitsune collection, with some surprises that will lead to another collection within the Kitsune Saga! I got The Professor Carter Series that has a returning character lol. I have some new characters with new stories that I’m exploring as well. I’m getting giddy just thinking about it.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life. When the sun rises. I rise. Well maybe a little earlier.
Different time zones can play tricks on the body. I spend time going from LA and then to the east coast. I like meeting and discussing what a lot of my books are about with people I know to see what sparks me not to fall into inertia.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I’m not writing I like exploring and learning. I binge watch shows on the go. Lol. Netflix is insane with the amount of content available right now. I stay pretty active. I’m also adding to my team of writers. My N.O. R. A. book was something that came from conversations I had with lesbians I met at a hookah bar in Hollywood. We spent all night together and o’ man it was amazing the things we
talked about. I was with them all night. Even got a front row seat at
some hot interplay that I didn’t think would occur. I immediately had to write when I left them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I was in elementary. It was story about a heroic T-Rex! He was like a superhero. I wrote three books about his adventures. He had a cape. It was weitten on construction paper, so I could add drawings.
What is your writing process?
I usually come up with topics of mixed genres and see if can build a story about the two. I also think about my own life and where are some of the places and interactions I've dealth with to see if I can possible share them. My sexual fantasies can be intense to I want to see if iraise the intensity of the readers as well.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
By the covers at first. If the cover has a lot going on but yet its not so bland. The boldness and pop. I think the flavor of the artist comes out. Then I want to see if the words matches what i see
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Peter Pan. Who ever really wants to grow up. What's a better place to want to live than neverland. You could fly. Eat whatever you want. You always want to be still youthful even as you age.
