Interview with Todd Michaels

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Expression and creation. Ideas for stories usually come at the oddest times. These ideas, like clips from a movie, play and replay in my mind. Writing allows me to expand the clip, in all directions, and discover the characters' stories. Although writing can be very laborious, it's exciting to discover the "rest of the story" as it unfolds.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are critically important. If no one read my stories, I would simply stop writing. I do love the expression, creativity, and freedom writing offers, but if no one reads my work, it does seem pointless.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on the re-write of my third story contracted with my publisher. Once I finish it, I have several other ideas I need to pen and submit. I'd love to have my third story completed and all pre-production duties finished before the end of Summer 2014,
Who are your favorite authors?
My first favorite was Edgar Allan Poe. I was amazed by his dark themes and settings. When I discovered Stephen King in junior high, I was immediately hooked. I actually learned of him by watching a TV special ('Salems Lot) and bought the paperback as soon as I could. I actually enjoy his writing style more than Poe; King's is more contemporary and less lavish.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life. Bills. Kids. Family. Why did I grow up?!?! :)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Living in reality, I'm sad to say. I do try to enjoy life. I enjoy my work, love my kids and family, and also try to stay active. I enjoy cycling and jogging, trying to stay in decent shape. I'm getting back into golf after a long hiatus. I also love music. In addition to guitar, I've also taken up playing the trumpet again, after a much longer hiatus. Even something as simple as a drive with my old Miata's top down makes me smile.

In a previous life, I loved to sail and water ski. If I was off work, I was on the water. God, I miss that. I do hope I can again catch the wind soon.

I also enjoyed competing in autocross events in my area and did fairly well. I, too, hope to "dodge cones" with my old friends, soon.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most of the ebooks I read currently come from my publisher. I proof for them, so I'm able to read them pre-release...and free!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. In fact, I still have it. It was in junior high, handwritten on loose leaf filler, with a hand illustrated cover on red construction paper. It was science fiction. I was in love with rockets, the space program, and the developing shuttle program. My teacher was the first person to encourage me to have it published.
What is your writing process?
I really don't have one, although I'm sure implementing a system would be helpful. I am envious of writers who write full-time. I find myself wishing for more hours in a day.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Barely. "Fun With Dick and Jane" maybe? First grade. I learned to read very quickly. Impact? Well, I thought it was dumb, sorry.
How do you approach cover design?
My publisher handles cover design. However, they do involve the writer from the start. I send a description of what I "see" for the cover, sometimes based on different scenes. They turn my words into an illustration or picture. Since I'm contracted, they have the final say, but I've only been impressed so far.
