Interview with Todd Newton

What do you read for pleasure?
I've always enjoyed traveling and stepping out of my day-to-day surroundings. The older I get, the more appreciation I seem to be developing for history and the differences in cultures. Traveling is an extraordinary way to broaden one's horizons. And ironically, I seem to do my best writing when I travel. I suppose it's the best of both worlds.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My iPad Pro has become an essential part of my travel. It is loaded with books, magazines, movies, and photos that keep me in touch and up-to-date no matter where I may be. I recently left home without it and almost felt as if I'd forgotten my shoes! That's how much I have come to rely upon it.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
It is always rewarding to see your books appear on all of the major online shopping sites, but the most effective source of getting my materials out into the world have been to market them at live performances and speaking engagements. Since the majority of my work is autobiographical, audiences seem to be more inclined to make a purchase after we have spent some time together and a degree of rapport has been established. Nothing is stronger than a handshake and a smile.
Describe your desk
My desk is a large oak piece that my ex-wife gave to me as a gift for my first Father's Day in 2002. The surface is covered by family photos. It is one of my most treasured possessions.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in St. Louis, MO, surrounded by family and good friends. Because I had such positive influences as a child, I have more great memories than I could ever share in a thousand books. A classic example would be the chapter titles The Greatest Wiffle Ball Pitcher in the World in my book, Life in the Bonus Round. It's all about my grandmother and how she shaped me into becoming an entertainer. That was one of the most emotional chapters I've ever written, but also one of the most rewarding.
When did you first start writing?
In 2006, I came to the realization that my career was going to require and incredible amount of traveling. Although I love what I do and never tire of it, the most important role in my life is that of a father and it can be difficult being away from my children for extended periods of time. To put a bit of a shine on it, I began writing things down that I wanted to share with my kids that perhaps they were too young to understand or appreciate at the time. Thoughts that I was having, things that I was seeing, interesting people I was meeting, etc. What began to take shape was very entertaining and meaningful. The more I shared the philosophies and experiences that were leading me to the life I'd always dreamed of, the more the first book, Life in the Bonus Round, began to write itself.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Host with the Most: Tales of a Tattooed Television Personality is somewhat of a continuation of Life in the Bonus Round. My television hosting career currently spans more than two decades, and for that I am extremely grateful. New and exciting things happen with every project I am fortunate enough to be a part of.
With this book, however, my writing has matured because I have matured. The result is a more detailed and open piece. I hope folks will enjoy it.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
A desire to be in control. With the literary market being what it is today, an author has the ability to make his or her own decisions without the influence of agents, publishers, or retail outlets. The pages of my books are filled with my heart and my soul and I don't feel anyone else should dictate how my words are expressed. By operating as in independent author I am able to stay in the captain's chair, so to speak.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords has allowed me to turn a concept in a reality quickly and easily. Particularly for my shorter books, I am able to write, upload, and distribute within a matter of just a few days. That keeps the momentum flowing for me. Smashwords is a valuable resource for anyone who has a book inside of them that is looking for a way to get out.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is the knowledge that my words will live on long after I am gone. My great, great grandchildren will be able to download my work and read what I was like, the way I spoke, what was important to me. My books are my receipt that I was actually here and that pleases me to no end.
What do your fans mean to you?
The people that watch my shows on television, read my books, and come to hear me speak are my boss. You are the ones to let me know what is working and what needs to be changed. Without you I would have nothing and I am forever grateful for your support and your loyalty. Thank you for asking that question and for allowing me to express my gratitude.
