Interview with Tom Germann

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I learned how to be a self motivator a very long time ago. The thought of getting up and making the best of the day whether it is working on Real Estate, getting ready for an Exercise, working on another chapter/concept, or spending time with the family will usually kick me into overdrive.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a good bit of my time in Real Estate (I am a Realtor after all), I spend a good chunk of my time with the military and of course I do tend to focus on my kids and their education. Overall I am always involved and busy.
I do wish I had more time to read as I think keeping your brain engaged is important and I find that people (I do mean myself) tend to lose their edge if they never do any reading or expand their thoughts past the daily grind.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
It's a bit silly really. I will sometimes just pop a description into Google and go looking at what comes up. Of course if I have read material that I like I tend to go back and sample that author again.
Ebooks are the best for me as I can take an ereader with me anywhere.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, quite clearly. I was not even a teenager yet. It was summer and I learned how to use the typewriter we had. I used lined paper and typed out 40 pages. It was science fiction
It was too compressed to be a story on its own. If I still had it and filled it in as any story should be I would estimate that I would have had a series on my hands. Even though it was done so long ago and I believe my parents threw it out I still remember a great deal of it and am starting to think back on it now.
Maybe one day I will sit down and start writing it up again.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Not as such. I read a lot of science fiction (in fact I read anything I could get my hands on) and a lot of military history and fiction as well. There are so many good stories out there but nothing that really sticks out as the first.
What do you read for pleasure?
I do no have as much time as I used to with how busy life is. My focus when I read is mostly science fiction. I also read a few horror stories but my interest has diminished as I have aged.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kobo Glow.
My in laws picked this up for me for Christmas 2 years ago and I use it all the time.
Describe your desk
Cluttered! My desk top is actually quite clear as I have learned to clear it regularly.
unfortunately the rest of my office looks like a bomb went off.
Then I realize that I have to look at the desk top and BAM! its cluttered again..... (looking around furtively I then sweep everything onto the floor on the one side so it is clear again!)
When did you first start writing?
I first started when I was about 9. My youngest son was diagnosed with a rare illness Fanconi Anemia in 2013 and I started writing. It was a way my brain kicked in and vented what was going on inside.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
This started with Real Estate. I have mentored new Realtors in past and I talked to so many that were new. They just did not know what was going on! Real Estate can be a dog eat dog world and I have seen many who did not know how to start and did not know what they were doing for the first few weeks/months.
I started writing a booklet on getting into Real Estate for some of the new people but they were already in the program.
Then I saw Smashwords and I thought I could have an impact on people who are just thinking about going into real estate.
Then suddenly all my old ideas started coming to the front so I started writing out my sci fi ideas.
My main focus now is still my real estate guides. There are so many people out there looking at going into real estate or getting into real estate as an investor that I wanted to put out short factual inexpensive books that could be looked at as a guide.
I tried years ago to read one of the two hundred and fifty page monsters on being a successful realtor and it had filler and I guess it was well written but there was just too much of it.
So I am going shorter and more to the point.
