Interview with Tom Schafer

Describe your desk
Black. Has a monitor and half a dozen beer cans on it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Fremont, Ohio. Mostly in poverty. I saw lots of people trying to get by, figured, in some aspect, I'd try to show them that no matter how bad things can get, they can always get worse....at least in your imagination.
When did you first start writing?
1993.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Prequel to Shadow of the Ripper. I want to take a dive into what "made" Jack the Ripper. Not just who he was, but what was responsible for him losing his mind.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Tired of the old Catch 22.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Only on here for about 3 days. But it is very well set up. And I know writers are not supposed to use the word very. But it's true. I'm very impressed with this site.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When people run into my bookstore and say...."Wow...loved it...will you speak at our meeting?"
What are you working on next?
Ten Bells Crying, Ten Belles Dying. Prequel to Shadow of the Ripper.
Who are your favorite authors?
Poe, Koontz, King, Barker, Straub, Lovecraft. If I have to supply first names, you probably won't like my work.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Owning my own bookstore. Although it cuts into the writing time sometimes, it's really nice to just talk to people about what they like to read.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
The "writer" answer here would be....reading. But in truth, I usually spend my spare time goofing around on social media sites, or watching sports on television.

A teenage boy, Bobby Crowe, and Detective Kevin Daulton are about to find out as the spirit of Jack the Ripper returns to haunt a small, Ohio town.
