Interview with Tony Berry

When did you first start writing?
In junior school. It was something that just came naturally. Didn't everyone write? Apparently not, but that didn't dawn on me in those infant years. There was nothing more pleasurable than being set a writing task by the teacher. And the local paper used to run mini-essay competitions on its children's page ... and I kept on winning and winning.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The Devil Deals in Diamonds is the latest in a series about a somewhat disgraced former British secret service agent exiled to Australia and somewhat reluctantly drawn into local skulduggery and crime. This time his past catches up on him as participants in an undercover incident in Sri Lanka track him down and embroil him in the fight against blood diamonds - a horrendous scourge being fought against at international level. Slowly he is being weaned back into the world of intrigue and danger that was his only life for more than twenty years.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Seeing the words meld into sentences and shaping those sentences into a story.
