Interview with Anthony Jacobs

Published 2015-08-12.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's a short story about the adventures of a security guard.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like to write and it challenges me. I tell bedtime stories to my kids and I make them up as I go along, so why not write a story.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has made my books more accessible.
What are you working on next?
I am finishing a book about a trio of convicts, who through their stupidity and plain bad luck, run into a series of misadventures.
Who are your favorite authors?
Donald E. Westlake, Carl Hiaasen, Dave Barry, and my editor and best friend Gabriela Louis.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to spend time with my children and one of our favorite activities is to play music. I play the guitar, one of my sons plays the bass and the other the drums. I still need to recruit the other two. I also like to garden and watch movies.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to read humor. I am a big fan of Carl Hiaasen. When the mood strikes, I read Horror. I have read every one of Stephen King's books. There are other times when I have read history and biographies.
Describe your desk
My desk is a cluttered mess filled with bits and pieces of other books I am writing, and my notes. If an idea strikes me, I'll write it down before I forget it, and it usually makes its way to my desk.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Indiana and Florida. I benefitted from being able to experience two completely different lifestyles dictated by seasonal changes, beach atmosphere, and midwestern lifestyle.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing in College, and did most of my writing when passing the time on particularly boring night shifts to keep myself awake. I often tell my children bedtime stories which I make up as I go along, mostly to make them laugh.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing to me is sharing stories that scare you, that make you laugh, and that entertain you and make you forget about your everyday problems for a little while.
