Interview with Tony Culver

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The use of the imagination to create vivid characters, events, stories.
What do your fans mean to you?
Well, in hot weather I use them to cool me down.
What are you working on next?
Time Vortex - the film script
Who are your favorite authors?
Herman Hesse, Tolstoy, Shakespeare,
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Sunlight, the internal clock, a bucket of water in my face if I'd been out on the tiles.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Currently, travelling the world on the internet. I'd like to 'visit' every country, return with great photos and create paintings using them as studies. I also spend mornings working out. When I go out in the evenings it is usually to a jazz pub for the music. I play piano.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a narrative poem about a bullfighter. I used to holiday, as a kid, in Majorca. Went to bullfights most Sundays.
How do you approach cover design?
I am a painter and illustrator, so creating a front cover is not a problem. I just take an incident from the manuscript, visualize it and start with a sketch which I then proceed to develop through 4 or 5 sketches until it 'works'. At which point I apply colour with paint, dry media and sometimes collage.
What do you read for pleasure?
Not a lot, I mostly read text books on different subjects. Currently studying the mysteries of film script writing with a view to application with this novel. I have written film scripts before, selling is not easy! If you're interested in scripts, I have two on Amazon Kindle - both titled CONQUISTADORS VARIATIONS - The Gods Return. Plotline based on Hernan Cortes' invasion of Mexico in 1518. BOTH - two versions of the same script. This is new to script writing. The standard practice is to write a SINGLE script (play or film or T.V. or radio through drafts). Try to sell that ONE. The Conquistadors project had me write TWELVE versions of the same script. All of them equally valid production scripts (for theatre). The reason? The practice of writing a SINGLE version of a script dates back to Aeschylus and Euripides 2,600 odd years ago and is still in use globally. Used by all script writers. I like to break with the creaking conventions of literary output and write in an ORIGINAL manner, NOT in the same way every other damn script writers has written his or her scripts.
Describe your desk
It is made of wood, would you believe, and has drawers on one side and compartments on the other. Two lamps stand on the top. It has been with me for years.
When did you first start writing?
At about the age of 15, in Majorca.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Hate to point this out, but writers don't write BOOKS. A book is a container of a MANUSCRIPT. That is what a writer writes. Anyone who says he is writing a book is being horribly inaccurate. SOME manuscripts might be published in BOOK FORM but until they are they remain manuscripts or documents on memory sticks. But, the story behind this manuscript is a short story I wrote in a writer's group I sometimes go to. The exercise was to write a story on an extreme sport. I chose scuba diving. A marine archaeologist who goes down to a wreck and finds a cabin still intact after 400 years under water. The shock drowns him. End of short story. In the novel he survives. Buy it and find out what happens.
