Interview with Dani Darko

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in St. Clair County in Illinois. It is in the St. Louis Metro East area. Everyone locally is really down to earth and supportive. I think that the support I receive from people definitely influences my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing comic strips and comic books at a young age, which I also illustrated. Though, I was rarely published. My comic strip "Double Trouble" was printed monthly in the Shiloh Ink newspaper and when I got older, a different comic strip called "Useless Information" was published in the SouthWestern Illinois College newspaper. I have been writing poetry since about 1998/99 when I took a creative writing class at the school.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I like to write poetry and have had an interest in writing and illustrating children's books. When I had the idea to illustrate my poetry, I jumped at the opportunity. My poems are usually humorous with some type of twist. I think people of all ages could enjoy them.
Who are your favorite authors?
Tim Burton is a huge influence on my writing. I also enjoy JK Rowling and many graphic novel authors like Art Spiegelman.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy spending time with my boyfriend, playing hockey, and drawing.
Describe your desk
It's a mess, yet I do know where everything is located. I think if I were to clean it, I would be at a loss to find anything!
