Interview with JT Hine

Published 2021-12-04.
When did you first start writing?
I have to say about 1956. My cousin Polly and I have been pen-pals since age seven, and we got past "how are you? I am fine." quickly. I have several boxes of unpublished work from high school and later, which you may yet read one day.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Rome, Italy. The Eternal City has probably influenced my writing more than any person, place or thing. I wrote the first book of the Lockhart series (published in 2020) before Emily & Hilda. It is set in Rome. The characters in my books have a deep connection with more than one country, as do I.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, but I remember the book I read the most times when I was young. I read Gulliver's Travels about seven times between age nine and thirty-something. Each time it was a new and different story, because I, the reader, had changed.
What is your writing process?
I write a scene about a character I picture, then I watch the character get into another scene and maybe meet another character. Then I fall in love with the characters and just follow them wherever they go.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Watching and feeling the characters move through the scenes in the text. When I write, I am living in their skin, and that is very exciting.
What are you working on next?
Publishing the sequels to Lockhart (Enemies) and Emily & Hilda (Rule Number One). I have started Book Three of the E&H series (working title: Desert Crossing). In 2022, I will start podcasts of the short stories in each series, before publishing audiobooks of both series.
How do you approach cover design?
Find a pro, although I did map out a few ideas using canva software. Not my strong suite.
Describe your desk
Any flat surface where I can sit at my laptop. Picnic tables in campgrounds and the dining room of a hostel are frequent locales. In my flat, I have a small, sturdy IKEA table.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Nook. I don't like back-lit screens, because I prefer paper.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Riding my bicycle to the next place. If not that, then I am spending quality time with friends or family. I like to combine the two by riding to visit people on my Christmas card list.
