Interview with Tracey Lampley

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do. As a kindergartener, I wrote a story about Sally saving her family from a house fire.
How do you approach cover design?
I leave it up to my graphic artist, Donna Collier.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
My five favorite books are: Roots by Alex Haley. I read it from front to back and absorbed all of that history. Absolute Power by David Baldacci intrigued me; it was about the President of the United States committing murder and almost getting away with it. I love all the Alex Cross novels by James Patterson. I also loved all of Terry McMillan's novels. The Firm by John Grisham was a thriller.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read the many submissions at my website like: Meet Me in Silicon Valley by Anita Claire; Imogene's Message by Christine Sherborne; Diana Survivor by Dean Dudley; Gotta Find a Home: Conversations with Street People by Dennis Cardiff; Glenfiddich Inn by Alan Geik.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my laptop.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Running a quiz, Posting in Facebook groups, and Posting on Twitter.
Describe your desk
Messy! I really must get organized.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small town in Hamilton, Ohio. Since my hometown was a small town, my book's fictional town is Kingston Park, Ohio.
When did you first start writing?
I've always wrote, even as a young girl of 4 or 5.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I know a few women who've been kept women. I mashed their stories and changed the personality of my main character.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I had no luck approaching traditional publishers, and authors seemed to get noticed quickly as indie authors.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords allows me to reach a broader audience and distribute my e-book worldwide.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My greatest joy of writing is receiving positive feedback.
What do your fans mean to you?
They are the best! They're very important to me--even though they're too embarrassed to use their name in writing reviews.
What are you working on next?
Currently, I'm enrolled in graduate school for American history, but I'll carve out some time to write Kept: Book Three.
Who are your favorite authors?
John Grisham, Terry McMillan, James Patterson, David Baldacci, and Christopher Reich.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Bills! Bills! Bills! Then knowing that I must promote my books.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I'm not reading and writing fiction, I'm reading and writing for my graduate coursework in American history. I sneak in a movie every now and then.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Since I'm a book reviewer at my site, Book Mistress Blog, I am inundated with review requests! I choose from them.
What is your writing process?
The story may play in my head for a while. Witnessing an intense conversation or argument works its way into my writing. I honestly try outlining, but sometimes the characters take over and bust up the outlining process.
Which genre do you enjoy writing?
Actually my genres are mash ups of different ones. For instance, Kept is a mash up of BWWM, erotic mystery thriller & woman-in-jeopardy. Kept: Book Two is a mash up of romantic suspense, woman-in-jeopardy mystery.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read in nursery school was about America. Of course I pronounced it Amerika rhyming with Paperika! I was mortified when the teacher corrected me. I was like: why didn't I know that? I live in America!
