Interview with Travis Bodick

What's the story behind your latest book?
The Plant Remedy came about after a couple years returning to Peru each summer to study with local shaman and healers there. Many people were asking me about how we connected with plants in the Amazon, or asking us about miraculous healings we witnessed from the magic of plant medicines.... I also had this feeling like I wanted to localize and expand the practices we learned so that they had more relevance in our day to day life. Out of all these feelings regarding my own practice and the desires of others for some help starting on this path I found myself creating this book.

It was scary at first writing this book because of the stigma around this topic.... Many people fear and demonize alternative medicines and of course there is also the war on drugs to consider which makes natural plants illegal but deadly pharmaceuticals accepted.... And of course I am sharing very powerful information in this book as well. People can really uplift or hurt themselves diving into the spiritual realms, and while most of the time it is incredibly healing, there are some people who are not ready to attempt this type of work on their own and need a in person guide. In the end though, I know this information is valuable and practical, and so far the response has been that the information is incredibly valuable and helpful for others which was always my main goal.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love being able to express myself, and I love learning about the world. I learn so much when I write - I have to do research, I have to really figure out what I believe to a very specific degree, and sometimes inspiration or ideas just come to me from somewhere else. Just being open to the process and flow of writing helps me learn so much, and especially when someone else reads it and learns something as well, it is just about the best feeling in the world.
What are you working on next?
I have two book ideas and both are inspired by plant medicine ceremonies I participated in. The first one which I want to start with is another non-fiction which focuses on rituals and ceremonies anyone can do in nature to help them connect with nature, the spirit world, and of course their own heart. Fire ceremonies, walking meditation, vision quest, geomancy - and all other kinds of nature based ceremonies which can be performed alone or as part of a larger plant medicine ceremony. This book will especially incorporate shamanic practices and philosophies and will be a mix of traditional and new ceremonies.

The second book is potentially a book series and will be fiction. This is a special tale first shown to me by the spirit of Ayahuasca while I was performing a two week fast in the Amazon jungle. It takes us to a mythical world full of spirits and creatures living in the wild where a small group of individuals must turn to nature and the spirit world to help them against an invasion of slave armies controlled by a demon overlord from a distant past. While a fictional tale, many real life events and possibilities are included in this story - enough to make the story come to life in a unique and very real way.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love reading - I could spend all day with a book, and it is hard for me to not get long winded when talking about favorite authors....

My two biggest inspirations for my writing are Graham Hancock and Ross Heaven. Both authors I can relate to their personal stories so much, and of course the subject matter they both write about is incredibly close to my heart. Both authors have taught me a lot about myself and helped me find my path in life when I was lost.

I also have a soft spot for fantasy fiction tales - especially anything written by Robert Jordan and L.E. Modesitt Jr. The Wheel of Time is maybe my favorite story ever told (either the WoT or East of Eden by Steinbeck - both very different and hard to choose just one!)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
My favorite feeling in the world is having everything I need in my backback and having complete freedom to go wherever I want. I usually find this when I either travel internationally or if I go backpacking in the woods. I love adventures with my wife, and being able to travel and explore new experiences.

At home I try to spend as much time in nature as possible, play lots of music, write books, see friends and family, read, cook, or just relax with my wife. I also spend a lot of time in ceremony learning more about myself and the spirit world. Best of all, I have an amazing wife to share all these adventures with, and she is really the best thing in my world.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Well, it's not too hard.... I tried and failed a few times to write an epic fantasy tale... I never got very far sadly!

But after a few years studying magic and taking lots of notes, people kept asking me what books I recommended on the subject... I had such a hard time really recommending any of the books, as I saw problems with each, so I ended up putting together my notes and turning them into my first book "Creating the Universe." The book came together so easily and naturally even though it was my first time writing anything more then a few pages - I really felt like I had answered a calling in writing my first book... Now I couldn't imagine my life without writing!
What is your writing process?
I just sit down and write. I try not to structure my process to much and I let myself be flexible - when the mood strikes I just write until it leaves!
What do you read for pleasure?
Sometimes I read to learn and sometimes I read to relax (both are pleasurable to me). I really like inspirational books and spirituality, passion and healing. I also really love a good story - mostly fantasy fiction, but also anything inspirational like The Alchemist or East of Eden.
