Interview with Trix Joyce

Published 2023-09-19.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to play the piano and draw a lot as well! So I'm spending my time a lot by the piano and with my iPad drawing toons and comics!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Both online and through friends who have similar interests.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a Swedish short story called "The House" and was in 5th grade (I was around 10 or 11 years old then). It was stories from different perspectives of people who lived in the apartments of the same house. It was quite good and I remember getting a very good grade on that one.
What is your writing process?
First I get an idea and then I use a physical journal or notebook to brainstorm everything I want to include. I also use Notion to jot down ideas for the future. Then I start with the outline and the title of the chapters, but only if it's nonfiction. And I don't always write down things chronologically. If it's fiction I need to build a database with the characters and their world, even if the world i similar to ours. It's a lot of work behind the scenes, even of a collection of short stories or a shorter novel!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I think I do... It was also in 5th grade and I read "Narnia: The Magicians Nephew" and it was the first book I read in English that was like a real book. Before that, I only read in Swedish. It more had an impact on me being able to read in a second language than the story itself. Because I clearly remember how the book felt like an easy read and I had never thought of that before.
How do you approach cover design?
Since I'm an illustrator and also have a degree in design I always do my own covers and designs.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mostly nonfiction like spiritual or "witchy" kind of books, but if I read fiction I really appreciate fantasy if they are more modern or have a clear difference from the mainstream fantasy. I read Harry Potter and Septimus Heap when I was younger. Nowadays I mostly read spiritual books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kobo Elipsa 2E! It's amazing because I can scribble on it and it comes with a stylus.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Recommendations via social media, I think. But I'm not very great at marketing...
Describe your desk
Everything has its own place, but that doesn't mean everything is neat and tidy all of the time! The desk itself is an antique old one with many drawers that have a key that I can open them with. Old calligraphy pens and lettering sets are sitting at the side of the desk and I both write by hand and on the computer there. It's a cozy corner of my apartment. I like the fact that my desk is quite used and old, it's not "perfect", but that is what makes it a great writing space for me!

She was different, and not in the way anyone in the little village could understand. She was the sunshine everyone tried to cover up, the gemstone who was too rough to be loved. The girl nobody wanted near. Except him. The first person to take her in, the first person to abuse and use her, and one of the hundred people guilty of making her condition worse.
