Interview with Troy Gathers

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Charleston, South Carolina. I grew up in the great City of Charleston, and it has everything to do with not only my writing but who I am as a person. My writing style is real and direct. Growing up in a southern town like Charleston is not as it's portrayed on the television. Charleston its very similar to a major city like Chicago, just less people. Everyone has a different mentality, agenda and you never know how things may turn out. If you go deep into my writings, you'll experience so many different experiences and feelings because in Charleston, South Carolina its never easy and nothing is handed to anyone.
What do your fans mean to you?
People that support me and my work are amazing. I don't believe in calling the people that generate my income fans or followers. I consider them as supporters, friends and family. Once we begin to label people as fans we may start to treat them that way. I believe in the power of words and I know that supporters will stand beside you in both defeat and victory. With that being said, my supporters mean everything to me. I cherish everyone that continues to support Troy Gathers.
When did you first start writing?
Although my first book was published recently, I've been writing ever since I was in elementary school. I still have the awards and invitations to events for all the literary work that I did back then. I wanted to release my first book in 2006 while still in undergrad but I decided to spend more time on my business ventures. I went on record in an interview in 2006 about writing my first book. Well, better late than never, right? Writing is a passion that I have always had and I'm so glad that I am able to express myself in this form effectively.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not at the moment. I've been writing stories since, I was a young kid in South Carolina but at this time I'm not able to remember any of those first creations. Hopefully, I can reminisce and capture a story or two, I'll be sure to record it when I do.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are Dr. Stephen Covey, John Maxwell, Les Brown, Zig Ziglar and Dr. Myles Monroe. There are a few others but these are my top five. The words from these elite authors will move anyone that has tapped into their true potential. I suggest everyone to read a book or two from these great authors.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Life inspires me. The idea of reaching higher in life is my motivator. Since I was a child, I would think big and throughout my life I have been positioning myself to live out all my dreams. As the old saying goes, nothing comes to a sleeper but a dream. When I get out of bed everyday, I'm taking one step closer to achieve all my dreams. That's a great motivator, actually believing that you can make your dreams come true should make it hard to sleep.
Describe your desk
My desk is busy. I'm always working on something new with business, so I have a very busy desk. I'm not the best in filing paper work, so I tend to create a castle of files. I once heard the saying, If your desk isn't messy then your not working. I like to use that saying to describe my office.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Great Question. Well, the backstory behind my book is interesting. Over the course of about 7-8 years I've composed over 2,000 quotes. One day I looked at all this material and said, why not publish this? I've been wanting to release a book and I was just sitting on all this information. I took the best 750 quotes that were related to the theme of the book and drafted Take Me With You. There are three chapters in the book; Friends, Family and Faith. The quotes that were selected are aligned with these three areas of a person's life. I didn't make this book to make anyone proud. I made this book to help people grow and change what my be hindering them from potential success.
What are you working on next?
Next, I want to continue working on the Take Me With You book series. I understand in the literary world it's all about a new book but I would like to continue building the brand of Take Me With You. I love the concept and what the title represents. Besides, my other business ventures, Take Me With You is my direction in book publications.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me is inspiring others. I'm just a kid from Charleston, South Carolina at heart. If I'm able to reach someone in England or Africa with my words, that's beyond joy. While we are on this planet, it should be everyone's mission to leave their mark. It was Dr. Myles Monroe that said the richest place on the planet is the cemetery because buried there are inventions that we will never see, ideas that we will never get and doctors that will never cure. I don't want to waste my talents and I don't want you to waste yours either. I want to add value to everyone that reads my book and I want to hear about it. That's joy for me, helping others.
