Interview with Truant D. Memphis

What are you working on next?
Post Oh!pocalypto Poppycock. A farcical caper set in Las Vegas during the apocalypse. The book is finished and currently being cleaned up for publication. It should be available before the end of 2016.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Waking up. As long as I keep waking up alive and human, I have to get out of bed and get to work. I'm still holding out hope for waking up on my home planet someday. It would be great to have my memories back, and to know that I'm not really a middle-class human. Not that there is anything wrong with being a human, if you like that sort of thing. I just enjoy surprises more than my humanity. Waking up an alien on another planet, and finding out my human life was simply scientific research, that would be a pretty cool surprise.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Pretty normal stuff. Spend time with the family. Hang out with my dog and do chores. I play guitar poorly, and paint poorly, and desperately hope I write better than I paint or play guitar. I make t-shirts too. I'm currently working on developing a series of mathematical equations that, when solved, will all have the same answer: Meatloaf.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, but I do remember the first long form story I wrote. It is a screenplay. My department head in college gave me a 3 credit hour independent study to develop a screenwriting class. I spent the semester writing a screenplay instead.
What is your writing process?
My routine is weekend based. Wake up early and well rested and get to work early on Saturday and Sunday. No TV noise or music. Silence and coffee, in a very large recliner. I always have a plan for what comes next when I get started.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The words Littlethumb Sneezed popped into my head while I was writing Post Oh!pocalypto Poppycock. I wrote the words down in a notebook and let them sit. When I finished POP I set it aside without one edit and immediately went to work on Littlethumb. The first draft of Littlethumb was the fastest I had ever written anything.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Hating other actors. I was writing and performing and realized I enjoyed writing the most, and was probably (hopefully) a better writer than performer, so I decided to focus on writing. Also, I really wanted to be able to tell people I write books, and then prove it, by having written books.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When you can feel the rhythm of the words as you type, and the keystrokes feel like music.
Who are your favorite authors?
My two most favorite are Tom Robbins and Kurt Vonnegut. Not long ago I read Post Office, and suspect I will like everything I read by Charles Bukowski. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Stephen King, for creating the Dark Tower series.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, but I remember the first "big" book I ever read. It was Watership Down by Richard Adams. I loved it so much. To this day, it is one of the few books I have read more than once.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the United States, on Earth. I find humanity absolutely chaotic, yet humans often desperately seek a sense of control and order to their lives. The whole business of being alive confounds me. My stories are a reflection of the chaos I feel surrounded by, and an outlet for me to feel control. My hope is, this culminates in something funny to read, because I like to make people laugh.
