Interview with Gianni Truvianni

Published 2013-11-21.
Who are your favorite authors?
My favorite authors are mostly Russian. Of course one of them is Dostoyevsky and I also adore Pushkin for his stories which later become operas by Tchaikovsky. I also am very much fascinated by Shakespeare’s plays specially "Julius Caesar" and "Richard III". I also admire Williams and Capote and in spite not liking horror was thrilled by Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” but I definitely prefer Russian authors.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Many things but writing is one of them yet I also love classical music, opera, ballet, photography, traveling, films and learning different languages.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Looking for ideas to write about but I also love the opera which has given me many of ideas. I also travel often which makes it easy to meet many people and exchange opinions and learn about different places and cultures..
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I mostly read about history and most of what I read now a days comes from Wikipedia.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not really since it was many years ago and most likely for school yet the first one I kept was "The Little Opera Singer".
What is your writing process?
I do not really have one. I simply get an idea and write it. In my whole life I have only made one outline and that was for school. Sometimes the whole book or story comes to mind and all I need is write it down and other times I simply write what comes to mind and go to where it takes me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story I ever read but I do remember reading Voltaire's "Candide" when I was 16 and being very impressed.
How do you approach cover design?
I really do not pay much attention to it. I simply pick an image which I feel suits the story. Many times I chose classical art works or photos which I find on the net.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Dostoyevsky's "Crime And Punishment" is one of them and for so many reasons yet I like books where all is not expressed in the story but in the thoughts that go behind the story. It is this kind of books which interest me the most. I also loved Wilde's "Picture Of Dorian Gray" for the same reason.
What do you read for pleasure?
History books. I love Paul Johnson's books on history.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I do not have one. I simply use my computer which is the old fashion type with the mouse and the screen.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I do not know any. I simply place my work on places like Smashwords and Amazon and place the links on Linkedin.
Describe your desk
An old desk in my basement.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in many places. Italy, New York, Peru and Argentina and I guess it made my writing more open to other ideas and multi-culturalism.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing back in 2004 and when I was 37 but I had written many things before yet never kept them or showed them to anybody apart from a few poems.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story behind my latest book is the death of Rasputin and the reasons I believe those who killed him had for doing what they did.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I just wanted to be an author.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It has helped me sell copies of my books so I guess one could say it has.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I feel like I am creating something and I feel what I write with a lot of passion. Of course I do not know if my readers feel this passion as that is not for me to say yet I do live my words and the images I try to create with them very deeply.
What do your fans mean to you?
People who I hope enjoy my work and get something worthwhile for the time and money they spend on my books.
What are you working on next?
A book called "Gianni Truvianni's Great Moments In Opera III" which describes what I see as some very beautiful operas.
What do you hope to get from writing?
I hope people will remember me after I am gone.
When you write a book or short story what do you mostly concentrate on?
When I write a book or a short story I mostly concentrate on the characters and developing them through out the story. The story in and of itself with me is not the point of my writing but the characters along with their ideas is. I always focus on characters and the way they associate and intermingle with one another. Actually as a mater of fact most of my books do not really have a story in the traditional sense but rather characters which I wish to present in all their attributes which sometimes are hard to describe in a few words or even paragraphs as they are people even if they are but fictional.
Apart from other writers what else has influenced your work?
Apart from other writers and authors, films have definitely influenced my work specially those which concentrate on the characters above the story and manage to create a world in the story. Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” being one of these films which influenced me in focusing on the exchange of ideas between the characters as well as creating a kind of world inside another. Forman’s film “Amadeus” also being one of these films which allows us to search deeper in to the characters. Of course I could give many examples as many have been the films which have given me ideas yet these were usually films were the characters were well developed in their ideas and all that made them credible as individuals even if sometimes they were but fictional.
