Interview with Johan Botha

What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to express myself and not having to wait ages for a book to get published.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing creates another world for me. I used to hide there as a child and always felt safe between the pages of books. Releasing my innermost feelings on paper creates a sense of freedom and happiness.
What do your fans mean to you?
Fans...well If you don't have fans you don't have readers and it is important to create a following of fans that enjoy your reading and that will support you with honest reviews whether good or bad. It helps an author improve his work and also creates a feeling of belonging if your work is loved.
What are you working on next?
i am a certified facilitator and moderator. The idea to create a home training series has popped up and I am busy creating a series called: How to train you human. Also, a science fiction project called Genesis, due for release in the next 12 months. I write in Afrikaans and English so all my titles will be available in both languages.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love to read: Dean Koontz, Stephen King, Wilbur Smith, Dan Brown and recently discovered Matthew Reilly.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am a morning person and love to wake up with birdsong in my ears and the smell of coffee in the air! I am a very positive person and love my work but the writing passion is busy taking over my daily life like a steam engine moving slowly along a mountain pass. It is gaining momentum as things go along.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I present courses all over Africa, love reading and movies. I write as much as I can and have writing projects that I am working on for the past 30 years all will become available as the train gets momentum. There is a snake somewhere in the house that pops up now and then for food and I love my dogs with a passion.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do! Tokoloshe was written at the tender age of 19 and I received such a bad review from a publisher in those days that I did not read the complete letter finish. It stopped me from writing for about 5 years. one day while spring cleaning I found a box with rejection letters and read this specific one to the end.I only then realized that it was sent to the children s section and was actually meant for the adult section. So I am almost done with that book as well and hopefully doing a better job at it.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I cannot remember all the books that I have read but, I was 12 years old and discovered a book by Erich von Daniken, Chariots of the Gods I later read all his books and always wanted to write something similar.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My laptop and my pc.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I market on social media and also create pamphlets that I put up at malls.
Describe your desk
Cluttered, don't touch!
