Interview with Jorge Valdivieso III

Published 2018-06-16.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Always! The first story I ever read was "Deception Point" by Dan Brown. I am a sci-fi nerd, and its exciting to read about certain technological advances (sorry...SPOILER) such as motorized snow skis controlled by the touch of a button, or even a gun that cannot ever run out of ammunition. It made quite an impression on my mind's creativity.
How do you approach cover design?
Ask yourself a few questions. First, ask "What is my goal?" This should be the first question that any author asks him/herself. Next, ask "How can I connect everything in my story with ONE image?" Check out Pinterest! All you have to do is type different word 'tags' and you can narrow a search. This helps get the creative juices flowing! Lastly, make sure you have a cover design that is attractive to anyone. What I mean by this is, if you are a horror novelist, you do NOT want to have a gory scene on the cover. It may be cool to you, but it WILL detract (rather than attract) possible fans.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1) The DaVinci Code; I love controversy and how this book really makes one question the Bible's history. Reality vs. fiction.
2) IT; I'm just a huge fan of the terrifying mind of Stephen King.
3) The Hot Zone; I love medical thrillers.
4) Once a Thief; Kay Hooper is brilliant at writing crime/mystery. It is also a book where I felt myself envisioning what all the characters looked like.
5) To Kill A Mockingbird; it is an incredible classic and an important book for anyone to read.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like reading anything that can transport me out of reality. Sometimes, we all just need a break from it. Even better, a book that can break the boundaries of reality and fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle!
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Crowdfunding on social-media. It has definitely increased awareness and popularity of my book without a literary agent.
Describe your desk
My desk rests in a dimly-lit office. It is fashioned executive-style, made of cherry wood with a coffee finish, and adorned with brass Roman figurines. A ceramic sculpture of Medusa rests in the far right corner to observe me while I write.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in California, but spent most of my life growing up in Wisconsin. Yet I still think I have deep roots in California, as it is a 'melting pot' of people. It is a place where you can be anyone you wish. Likewise, I try to fashion my writing to where one can "feel" they are somewhere else, or even better, connect with a character.
When did you first start writing?
November 24, 2016.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It takes place in the world we know currently; however, we live amongst people with power sets, or mutants. These mutants are not like those that one finds in Marvel magazines! The mutant powers actually stem from the exploits of current government research: telekinesis, astral projection, and extrasensory perception. Our current laws have been changed to govern both humans and mutants; likewise, a single agency enforces the laws to protect the world. But a mysterious evil suddenly emerges from the darkness that threatens the balance. Now, the lives of many are at stake, man and mutant.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My drawings and painting, all of which have created the foundation of this book series.
