Interview with Richard Weirich

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm at the best time in my life, able to do what I love, which is creative writing. There's always a new twist in a story, a puzzle to solve, or a character personality trait to enhance. I go to bed with questions and wake up with a new perspective which always makes for a fun day. The short answer to your question then is- "Writing inspires me to get out of bed every day."
Who are your favorite authors?
Mark Twain, Harper Lee, Debbie Macomber, and John Grisham, to name a few.
What are you working on next?
Just wrapped up my sixth novel, Hope of Cherry Blossom Lane. I keep a "what if" list which is where I get the idea for my books. Most attractive on the list is a story about a former homicide detective turned pastor. I'm thinking about a series of novels on that theme. The working title is Brother Tyler Cane.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, movies, and family...
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually search by genre...which is generally dictated by my writing project.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes I do. When I was in the third grade we were assigned a creative writing project based on an event from our history book. I wrote a story based on the Roman soldiers who were assigned to guard Julius Caesar. Obviously, they failed, so I attempted to demonstrate what went wrong. My teacher was impressed enough with my work to have me read it to the class.
What is your writing process?
I always start with plenty of research, construct a detailed outline, and then I write and rewrite. Most importantly, I work at it every day.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I'm not sure that it was the first, but it was the first I can recall. No Children, No Pets by Marion Holland. Read it over and over. What amazed me about that book was that I felt like I was a part of the story.
How do you approach cover design?
My wife's an artist so she has considerable input but I always look for something that genuinely captures the heart of the story.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Now there's a heavy duty question. Well, number one is easy. The Bible has to be at the top of my list because it has impacted my life more than anything I've ever read. Second, would be The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. It's a masterwork of colorful characters, humor, and suspense. Third, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald for much the same reason as the Mark Twain novel, but with far more pomp and circumstance. Fourth, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Had to get in a plug for the lady who lives just down the road from me. Fifth, Stories by Edgar Allen Poe. How can something so dark be so elegantly beautiful?
What do you read for pleasure?
Everything that I read, with the exception of the news, is for pleasure. The news is depressing which is why I like uplifting stories.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
Describe your desk
My desk is my lap...where my laptop rests most of the day.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the small town of Strasburg located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. In most of my books, the area has figured prominently in my writing. In fact, my third novel, Farewell PFC Polk, is set in Strasburg and my second book, In the Valley of Hope, is staged in the Shenandoah Valley. The town of Harmony Springs in Hope of Cherry Blossom Lane is modeled after Strasburg.
When did you first start writing?
My first recollection of writing was in the second grade, when as a class assignment we were to write a description of the coming of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2. (Yes, it was in public school.) That's when I received my first five star review. From that moment on, I was hooked.
