Interview with Vanitha Vaidialingam

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The first thought of the day is often a very interesting one. It prompts me to action. I love getting out of bed reveling in being alive and able to plunge into the daily routine of life. I love interacting with people, watch them move through their lives worrying, hurrying or just happy to be doing what they are doing. In short, it is the hustle and bustle of life that gets me out of bed every day.
What is your writing process?
Stories pop into my head. A phrase during a conversation; a newspaper article; something I see on the road--everything inspires a story and it gradually takes shape. I often share the raw tale with my family and they poke holes into it. This helps me identify the gaps in my tale and work on them. The final shape takes 2-3 days to spring out.
What do your fans mean to you?
They mean everything. They are the people who endorse our work and give us the right to call ourselves writers! Without our fans we would have no motivation to write.
Describe your desk
My desk is my PC. Every single thought is recorded on my Windows PC. I love Microsoft Word.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a middle class family at Chennai--a metropolis in South of India. My family was not very conservative. We grew up as free thinking individuals. Traditions and beliefs could be questioned and even contravened if we could prove that we were right in our thinking. Our parents were very forward thinking and loving persons. So, it is not surprising that I am very interested in how other people react when their prejudices and beliefs are challenged. I know not everyone is brought up to question them....
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Frankly, I have not been doing much marketing. That is an area I have promised myself I would explore. Meanwhile, I am just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that my readers will find my book interesting enough to recommend it to their friends.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The ease of publishing and also the ease with which you can take your book off the shelf if you decide that it is not good enough is what attracts me to Smashwords and sites of the ilk! So far, I have had five reviews of this book on Amazon and all of them positive. So I have kept the book on the shelves and also dared to publish it on Smashwords.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love mysteries. I love stories about people of every kind. I read children's books or teen books and adult fiction with equal interest.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Amazon's Kindle. But I have epub and Kindle applications on my PC too. I read on the PC as frequently as I read on my i-Pad or Kindle device.
What's the story behind your latest book?
These stories were written over a period of several years. They were mainly written for my own pleasure. I happened to share some of the stories with my mother in law and she was loud in her praise. She showed them to my husband and other relatives and everyone who read them, praised them. They encouraged me to publish. So here I am with my book self published!
