Interview with Vie Binga

Published 2016-02-05.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Stand Up Paddling, Kayaking, Rock Climbing, Scuba Diving, Surfing, Hiking or Reading.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Through people that inspire me.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I do! I was 12 years old... It was a story depicting the dialogue between a classroom desk and the student sitting at the desk.
The desk was telling the student how different life was for him as a tree in the forest and that he was really happy to now be of service to the student.
What is your writing process?
My writing process involves a lot of reading.... I read everything I can get my hands on that is even remotely related to what I want to write about. I then step back away from the subject for a while to fully digest, absorb and assimilate everything. Then I start writing, rearranging, eliminating. After a few iterations, I decide that it will never be as perfect as I would like it to be. Time for editing and publishing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes, I do! I was born and raised in Greece, so my early exposure to fiction involved Greek Authors. My first and most favorite writer for a while, was Menelaos Loudemis. a humanitarian, political activist, and provocative thinker of the 20th century. I think I had pretty much read every book he ever wrote by the time I turned 12. My first one was called "A Child Counting The Stars" and I know it has forever morphed my outlook on life.
How do you approach cover design?
I use my own pictures but outsource the process of turning them into a cover.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. Natural Born Heroes by Christopher McDougall for showing us how incredible our human potential is.

2. The 4-hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss for showing us why we should never want to retire.

3. The Naked Spirit by Dr. Jon Whale for teaching us how to connect our mind with our heart.

4. The Obstacle Is The Way by Ryan Holiday for reminding us that all the great thinkers of the world were faced with obstacles way bigger than ours.

5. One Spirit Medicine by Alberto Villoldo for giving us very practical tools to help us thrive.
What do you read for pleasure?
Business books. As terrible as this may sound, I get pleasure out of pain, mentally that is. Business has always been a very challenging topic for me, one that puts me out of my comfort zone. Confronting my fear makes me happy.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The kindle app on the ipad.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Outsourcing.
Describe your desk
I use a standing desk at least 80% of the time. Since I also like to write outside, I use 2 sawhorses and a paddleboard on top of them. I am only 5'1" so it is the right height for me. :-)
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Athens, Greece. I believe that all those years of studying ancient greek philosophy have added a more analytical nuance to my writing.
When did you first start writing?
When I was 12 years old.
What's the story behind your latest book?
These days, I write mostly about non-fiction. I enjoy debunking "myths" and writing about things that help people feel better. My latest book is about how to practice yoga on a paddleboard, it is called the "SUP & Yoga Sutras ~ Reinventing The Art Of Yoga". Yoga on the paddleboard seems so difficult and foreign to most people, due to all the social media hype created by magazine cover models, yet in reality, with proper instruction, t is very easy and accessible to every one.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I love to teach. Writing books gives me the opportunity to reach and teach a lot more people, across the world.
